2010 Poujeaux

A few weeks ago I picked up some 375's of the 2010 Chateau Poujeaux. This is one of those Cru Bourgeois wines that really ranks up with some of the classified growths.

And boy was this singing! Deep red color, beautiful aromas of blackberry and leather out of the gate, structured and intense on the palate. It was approachable and enjoyable now, but has the power to last a long time. And at $35-$40 a 750 bottle, fantastic QPR.

2010 Poujeaux is a great buy. Couple of years ago, I got 2 splits each of 2009 and 2010 to compare side by side. Both proved great and cannot go wrong if you pick either of them. But for my taste, I preferred 2010 to 2009 as I could sense a bit of heat on the 2009 version in its finish. Immediately I procured 2010 version...

Just an reminder, this chateau changed a lot since the 2009 vintage according to reports as a new consultant was brought in (Derenoncourt). Of course, this might be a good thing (investments, improvements), but stylistically it is no longer the wine that Harry used to love. Orlando Bobby just started a thread on WB on his dislike for the 2009 Poujeaux. for instance.

For me, this is a try-before-buy regime change.

Looking at tasting notes on Cellartracker suggests that the '10s are leaner than '09, and the '11s are leaner than '10 - as I would expect based on my experience of these vintages from Bordeaux so far.
I think I'll pick up a couple each of '10,'11, and '12 from Saratoga Wine Exchange, as the prices seem decent enough, especially compared to the '09 price of around $50.
Prices for older vintages like '00 and '03 look reasonable on Wine Searcher as well.

I was really surprised reading the Orlando Bobby review of the 2009. I haven't had the 2009, but I imagine that the style is a lot closer to 2010 than to 82.

I tried it at a tasting of predominantly 2012 left banks two years ago, which were hard work. The 2010 Poujeaux really stood out, so I bought a case.

I was really surprised reading the Orlando Bobby review of the 2009. I haven't had the 2009, but I imagine that the style is a lot closer to 2010 than to 82.

I haven't had older vintages or 82 of Poujeaux, but yes, I don't see how 09 is not closer to 10 than 82. I felt 09 leaning toward a bit modern style for my liking and I do not like the sensation of heat in the finish of a wine (if I wanted, I would opt for a scotch at a cheaper price... ). So I preferred 10 version. But I would say 09 is closer to 10...

Not the Poujeaux, but I have tasted some wines, and well-rated ones, often shiraz, that taste like they were raised in un-rinsed, used Jack Daniels barrels. I don't get the popularity of these wines at all.

IIRC, both 2009 and 2010 have higher alcohol levels, typical for those vintages. But I felt 2010 was better in masking the higher levels of alcohol and for me has better balance...

In terms of alcohol, my sweet spot is 13 to 13.5%. Generally speaking, when it's approaching 14%, I can begin sensing it. I do not prefer wines that deliver heat in the finish
