Enjoying the 2006 Chateau Sociando Mallet tonight. A bottle I had at my brother's place this summer was a bit more dense. That bottle tonight has a deep red color. Nose is nice on lot of black fruits (black currants, prunes, black berries), ashes, noble wood, light toffey and something like sweet cherries. In mouth, good presence of black berries, great tannins, austere black prunes. Sweet oak on the final with red berries. Good bottle but more simple than what I'm used with Sociando. Tn: 88.
Yesterday, had the 2012 Chateau Cos d'Estournel, a dark red wine, with a closed nose on chocolate, dust mineral and black berries. In mouth, great concentration of black berries, soil, spices, oak, and blackcurrants. Lots of tannins, dense, sandalwood, promising. Tn: 90+. Keep minimum 8 years.
Also the light 2012 Chateau Climens, all on peaches, flowers, apricots, on the nose. In mouth, fresh, grapefruit, citrus, flowers, elegance but to me missing some intensity, sweetness and length. Very young. Tn: 88.

Leftover of the 2012 Chateau Climens tonight is still good, with lots of flowers, sweet lemon, light roasted botrytis. In mouth very good attack but goes down in intensity quickly. Some bitterness on the final. Rating maintained: 88.

Is Sociando in a slump since 2005?

I don't think so, Jim. I have cellared 2008, 2009, and 2011 so far. Impressive vintages, as always in the past.

No Jim, it is not Sociando the problem. 2006 is the slump!
