Top Ten Wines of the Year

Post by Jeff Leve »

2016 was a great year of wine. While my top ten list has some of the usual suspects, I think there were at lest a few surprises this year.

What were your top ten wines from 2016?

My top ten were:

10. 1986 La Conseillante
9. 1950 Yquem
8. 1961 Leoville Las Cases
7. 1921 Palmer
6. 1988 Mouton
5. 1989 Haut Brion Blanc
4. 1934 Leoville Las Cases
3. 1950 La Mission Haut Brion
2. 1996 Chateau Margaux
1. 1964 Cheval Blanc

All but two were with BWE connections (current or absent). In fact five of them were with Comte Flaneur.

1990 Beausejour Duffau is still on my wish list, if only to find out what all the fuss is about.

Can't build a list off the top of my head, but no question that my #1 is the same as Tim. Great wine is even better when you share it. Thanks Tim!

I have to think about it and look my notes.

But for sure 1990 Chateau La Conseillante, 1990 Chateau Beauséjour-Duffau and 2008 Dal Forno Amarone are there.

What else?

In alphabetical order, I would have a tough time ranking them as they were great in different ways. I'm in an Old World state of mind as I think about this. Ask me tomorrow, I might be in a New World state of mind and list 10 others.

2009 Allemand Reynard
2000 Angelus
1989 Beaucastel
1988 Climens
1989 Conseillante
1955 Haut Brion
1988 Krug
1989 Montrose
1989 Pichon Baron
2001 Yquem

Congratulations Jeff that is some list. I compiled my H1 2016 top 100 list here:

http://comteflaneur.blogspot.co.uk

My top ten wines in the first half were all Bordeaux:

10 Chateau Leoville-Lascases 1982
9 Chateau Margaux 1982
8 Chateau Margaux 1999
7 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2010
6 Chateau Leoville-Lascases 1961
5 Chateau Margaux 1990
4 Chateau Margaux 1961
3 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1998
2 Chateau Margaux 1996
1 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 2009

H2 was better than H1 and in the top ten would be the likes of Mouton 82, Latour 82, Yquem 76' Yquem 71, Noël Verset Cornas 1998, Robert Jasmin Cote Rotie 1990, Chave Hermitage 1982 en mag, Gaja Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo 1989 and Giacomo Conterno Barolo Montfortino 1990.

Tonight we opened up Mouton 1996. I think it will be a beauty.
