The 2007 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses has been uncorked

Post by JimHow »

Back in the office today, pretty productive actually, but not quite ready for my vacation to end.

And so. At last. My first encounter with Chinon....

I'm not impressed with this wine. It is just too thin, acidic, stern, humorless.
I mean, come on. I like my 2002 Bordeaux.
I knew left bank Bordeaux 2002. 2002 left bank Bordeaux was a friend of mine. This, sir, is no 2002 left bank Bordeaux.
The nose is nice. But the palate is thin and completely without any depth or merit.
Rating: 80 points.
Maybe I'll "see the light" with the next bottle.
I'll mix a bottle in at the super bowl party and see if it gets any traction.

In my admittedly limited experience (but with highly recommended and praised wines), this comment should be the dictionary definition for "Chinon".

Chinon
noun| CHIN-non
1. Chinon is a commune located in the Indre-et-Loire department in the Region Centre, France. The regional area is called the Touraine, which is known as the "garden of France". It is well known for its wine, castle, and historic town.
2. A red wine, found too thin, acidic, stern, humorless by wine cognoscenti.

Jckba: I mean, I'm "getting" this $26 bottle of wine while trying to counsel a Chinese friend of mine in Queens who is terrified that the big man is going to come after her. She's not Muslim. She's not from one of the Muslim countries. She's from Shanghai. But she's terrified. "This is Nazi!" She really has nothing to worry about, and yet. Anyone who is not Donald-Trump-white is terribly on edge. This is so sad! I need another glass of Chinon....

I too have been subjected to no end of Olga Riffault over the years, under the theory that if I like BDX, I must be willing to like underripe green peppery Cabernet Franc.

I've never fallen for that. So I can get what JimHow is saying here.

The Loire makes plenty of great wines ... blancs.

That's what I like from there.

Vouvray is always a favorite but doesn't keep.

jckba this wine is in stock at the Manhattan Wine Company, very reasonably priced.
I'm willing to give it another chance. Maybe it needs more age?

A note just posted today on Berserkers...

2007 Olga Raffault – Chinon – Les Piscasses. Warm vintage + Loire = something nice. A touch of saddle/brett on the nose and a hint of cab franc green veges (which I like). Lovely balance here. Ample ripe fruit but also acid to keep it fresh. Moderate tannins, so the whole package is elegant. A tad thin at the end, I thought, but still yummy. Purchased recently for $24 (!!). Wish they had more.

Sell them to me Jim!

These age amazingly well....last year at Orlando Bobby's, our group picked the '77 Olga Raffault as WOTN, that's with a Mouton in the line up.

I'll uncork another bottle with the wings, ribs, lobster, etc., etc., at our Super Bowl party and see if I have a different take....

I really want to like Chinon. It seems like a wine and region I would like. I enjoy the emphasis on terroir and nuance, and of course it's a French wine which speak to me by and large. I like the whites from the region. The prices are very attractive. I am not green phobic, in fact I like some pyrazines and capsicum in my red wine profile. People whose palates align well with mine really dig it.

By it's not happened. I tried a dozen or so different Chinon from producers like Baudry and Olga Raffault with my local wine buddies. By and large, the wines didn't speak to us. Some we downright disliked. One Olga Raffault had a distinct essence of roadkill. I ended up deciding drinking it was a form of masochism. It was a head scratching experience. Even top rated Beaujolais, which I've never really grooved on, is at worst inoffensive.

But to each their own. It would be a boring wine world if all wines spoke to all people.

Very true sir

And I have similar views on gamay

Up until a Foillard Morton cote du py 2013 came calling at a group tasting.
~reflecting~
Oh my what is this freaky little number?...crazy juice, like it was somewhat sourced from another planet...pure electric, tangy, crunchy fruit profiles that I could not comprehend, flinty. Exciting stuff

The bojo was WOTN for some which included a line up of Haut Brion, Harlan, Duhart, Monte Bello, Pape Clement, D'armailhac and others
