2012 Bordeaux summary?

Post by Gerry M. »

After all the good words about the vintage, I have not seen a thread that consolidates or summarizes all the positive experiences together. While the focus is on 2014 now I'd like to make a run at a couple of mixed cases. I've had a couple of them and have been impressed.

As I recall Jeff Leve has a good assessment of the vintage Gerry.
I think the general consensus is that the right bank was strong.
Myself, I've just had really good experiences with this vintage from both banks.
It is accessible now but I would not characterize it as a "light" vintage, a la 1993, 1997, 2007, etc.
I think this is closer to an "elegant" vintage like 1985, 2006(?). Nicely balanced.
And the prices seem to be right.
I mean, $26 for 2012 Barde Haut at MacArthur's (and $22 for 2012 Haut Bergey before it sold out) is about as good as it gets in my humble opinion.

I noticed that the appellation of Marquax has been very rewarding. I've had Rauzan Segla twice and love it and Cantenac Brown once (like it). I liked Pontet Canet but only had a taste - enough to buy a bottle. Baud Haut and Haut Bergey have been winners.

My experience of the vintage has been positive. I think it was the revelation of the 2015 tour to Bordeaux. Just like BWE discovered the 2002 vintage about a decade ago.

There are several I have tried which genuinely are five star, top drawer wines

Five star

Leoville-Lascases
La Fleur Petrus
La Conseillante
Rauzan Segla
Pontet-Canet

Others which are very good

Four star

Mouton
Montrose
Leoville-Barton
La Lagune
Du Tertre

I bought some 2012 La Conseillante based on your recommendation Ian. Everything I have tasted in this vintage I liked

Ian, IMO 2013 does not deserve such a high ranking. :)

I think it is a high quality problem Blanquito :)

I think 2002/04/06 are pretty close really...but the 02s were less strong than 04 and 06 on the RB...but the fact that it is in the lower thirdile reflects how good it has been in bordeaux

2002 is just real unique for me.
It is like no other vintage since 1988.
It is as "classic" 12.5% on the left bank as it comes.
And what I'm starting to find interesting is that we are hearing some right bank success stories from 2002....

I opened a 2012 Ch. Duplessis last night. It's a Marie-Laure Lurton wine.
There's a wisp of that burnt rubbery Merlot aroma, which detracts slightly for me, but otherwise it's rather nice.
Quite approachable now, with medium acidity and ample tannins, pleasant and uplifting.

I concentrated on RB and Pessac. Bought on recommendations and/or experience with older vintages but not yet tried:

Conseillante
Client
Clos Fourtet
Troplong Mondot
Larcis Ducasse
Smith Haut Lafitte
Malartic Lagraviere
Pape Clement
du Tertre
