BWE'17 - Wednesday night at Ed's

Now that we are getting close to BWE'17 SF, I wanted to start some hype for Wednesday night

As I mentioned earlier, I'd like to have folks come over to my place in SF and start the week's festivities with some old stuff.

I'll get in some cheese and bread & nibbly things (not dinner). I have a moderate amount of stemware but if locals brought some it would be appreciated.

I know everyone doesn't have stuff this old, but I thought it would be fun as a theme. If you don't have anything old, don't sweat it. Just show up!

Below are the wines I have stood up - a 1947 Clos de Beze from Drouhin Laroze, a 1957 Corton from Doudet-Naudin, a 1959 CdP from Brotte, and a 1967 CdP from Chateux de la Gardine.

So who else is in so I know how much bread/cheese/nibbly things to bring in?

Sounds awesome, Eddie, but I don't have anything that old!

Sound fabulous. By the color, your wines seem still in shape Ed. Unfortunately, arriving only Thursday... Have fun with all who will attend.

To tell you the truth, I'm sad to miss the cheeses, as I remember the 3 cheeses you brought at Michael-P's place in 2003...

Ha, trust me Nic, nobody is going to want to drink it, it looks like vinegar. The bottle is only two thirds full.

Thanks, Ed. Unfortunately, Lucie and I arrive on Thursday.

But I did locate a certain 1990 Creme de Tete that we both like for Saturday (or Friday).

Wow!
Can someone save one pour for me of the Creme de Tete?
I always mean to taste it and never get to it.

I'm in for Wednesday, so the theme is ancient wine? I think my oldest is a 1970, I'll have to check.

The 90 Filhot CdT is a killer sticky. That's one that BWE introduced me to.

I have a lone bottle of Filhot Creme de Tete...I will hold on it so that I have an opportunity to share with BWErs whenever it might be...Hopefully soon...

But please do report on it so that I will know its status...

Not for Wednesday, but early warning to Ed:

I am bringing Saturday a special Sauternes I think you will like, since you have in the past. And it's not Filhot CdT.

Marjorie and me plan to join in on Wednesday evening. Have to look around but pretty sure we can bring something fortified that is more than 60 years old.

Stuart - I think I know what that is, and if I am right, the age would fit right in this group.

stefan - yum!

Keep the plans coming, and please don't worry if you don't have anything super old. Its fun for me to open this stuff - just show up!

SF-Ed:

As you know, old wine is my thing. Sadly, I will have to miss the Weds night event as I will be in Dubai on a project. I don't fly back until Thursday morning.

At least I can go to the Thurs event, and Nalan and I will both be at the Fri and Sat events.

I'll look for all the BWE reports of amazing old wines tasted on Thurs - enjoy!

I'll bring a 1970 Beychevelle on Weds.

Ed, are we meeting at 789 Dolores St? What time should we arrive? Can we bring anything? I hope to bring some stems with me.

Logistics for Wednesday night:

Come to my place in SF (where you all mailed your checks)
Let's start at 6
Cross street is 21st street

I'll cover stuff to eat - I'll have bread and gougeres from Tartine (to save folks the insane lines), a few well selected cheeses, and some charcuterie from Fatted Calf. No need for anyone to bring food.

About a $10 Lyft or Uber from downtown, or an easy $2.50 ride on the J streetcar with a single flat block of walking (recommended if only for the amazing view over Dolores Park on the way). You can also BART to 24th St. but then you have a steep hill to come up.

I am not sure how many people are coming, but it probably won't be a horde, so I'll probably be OK on stems.

What matters the most is to bring yourself and a great attitude to start out a fantastic weekend!

Ed, looking forward to seeing you and a few others on Wednesday. I'll be bringing two vintage Inglenooks, a bottle of their 1959 Charbono and also a 1962 cabernet. High hopes for both, but we'll see. I'm going to open them the day before and give them some air. See you soon.

Ed, how did you post the picture of your bottles - I'm a little challenged here. I've been looking around for the ability to add a photo and I'm at a loss.

I think we all need a lesson in San Fran to learn how to upload photos onto the site. Even from your description Ed I'm lost.

Here is how I do it.

1. I take a picture on my iPhone.

2. I pull up the picture on my iPhone screen from "all photos."

3. For some reason, some pictures get posted upside down on the site. All of Nic's pictures, for example, appear upside down. To remedy this, I do the following:
I rotate the picture completely around back to its upright position. I then click "Done" on my iPhone. This seems to take care of the problem of the picture eventually appearing upside down.

4. I email the picture to myself, selecting "medium" size.

5. Once it is in my email, I download the picture to my computer.

6. At this point, you have to click "post reply" in the BWE forum thread. ("Quick reply" will not allow you to post a picture.)

7. I then click "upload attachment."

8. I then click "choose file." This brings up my documents. I find my picture in my documents and click it. I then click "choose."

9. I then click "add the file" on the BWE site.

10. I then click "submit."

I know... It's crazy.

ok here goes.....

It failed because says exceeded max file size allowed is 256kb and my jpg images are 2.4MB. Doesn't seem to allow me to compress the images further. Still looking for help. Maybe the smaller file size of iphone allows the downloads??

To get the images to work save them as a JPG without maximum resolution to greatly lower file size.

To show some more images - the cheese, Tartine bread and gougeres and charcuterie are out and ready

I am really curious about the old Cali Cabs. I took a bottle of 1960 BV Georges Latour to a Francois old wines dinner in Paris once, and it shocked the table with the depth of complexity yet unmistakable California character.

Really fun evening. We only had a couple of misses (the 1967 CdP and the 1959 Charbono) and a bunch of very good wines.

Arguably the best wine was the 1957 Corton. Rich and deep, it had that "its old but it tastes young" thing going on that the best old wines have.

The 1959 Brotte CdP was amazingly good, given it is bad negociant stuff. Very lively with lots of cedar tending toward cinnamon.

The 1947 Clos de Beze had seen better days but was still kicking and could have used more contemplation.

Peter's 1959 Charbono was shot, but the 1962 Inglenook Cab was dark, full, and long. A bit oxydized but really fun and shows how long Cal Cab can last.

Chris brought a 1947 Banyuls that was excellent. I would have guessed 1977 port blind. Lots of red fruits, long, and not at all hot.

Patrick's 1970 Beychevelle was sound but not particularly exciting. Another wine that in a different scenario would have shown more from its subtlelties.

BD kindly brought a 1996 Lynch Bages. Not the greatest showing of a great wine with too much green for me. I expect to see better Bordeaux showings later in the week.

All in all, good fun and a great evening (and I kicked everyone out early as I have to go to work early tomorrow morning). An auspicious start for BWE SF '17!

I completely agree with Ed's comments. A great start to The BWE weekend.

Ed and Lisa graciously served up some delicious cheeses and charcuterie and also some hard to source bread from the legendary Tartine in San Francisco. Of 8 or 9 preposterously old wines, only the 2 that Ed mentioned weren't memorable. The '57 Corton was outstanding, as was the '59 Chateauneuf. The '47 Banyuls rocked. The '62 Inglenook cab was a surprise - still dark and brooding with a long finish. And that was just their regular bottling, not their "cask" reserve. In my mind the WOTN was the '57 Corton. 7 of the 9 wines ranged from good to outstanding and it was a totally mixed bag with some low fills and corks that slipped into the bottles.

See you all Friday and Saturday.

Great opening night, thanks to Lisa and Ed for welcoming us into their beautiful home. The wines showed very well by and large and the bread really was a treat. I was higher on the two Bordeaux than Ed, and I enjoyed the 2 burgundies a lot. We finished off the 96 Lynch at the after party and it was showing very, very well.
