TN: 2000 GPL

Post by Comte Flaneur »

Broad-shouldered, foursquare, tannins receding, wet stone, graphite and cedar with an abundance of rich fruit, power and concentration. Chewy and dense. This has more meat in the sandwich than the 1996, more mid-palate density, but less elegance. It is more similar to the impressive 1995. Which one is best? You need to try them all side-by-side. It will be interesting to see if the 2000 develops complexity with age or simply evolves, like other vintages arguably did.

A good 2000 .. whether it will turn out to be 'great' remains to be seen. Maybe it lacks the precision of the really great wines. But I really liked this. Although when I tasted them in a vertical in 2015 the 2000 was marginally my favourite wine, I think the 1996 GPL is probably still my favourite vintage of this estate.

The '96 better than the '82 or 90?

No, or certainly not yet.

Thanks for taking one for the team, Ian. I checked and I have close to a case each of the 95 and 96 GPLs, but only 2 of the 2000. While it sounds good, your note doesn't have me cruising the web looking for more. We had a partial vertical of GPL a few years ago in Denver and I wasn't particularly taken by the 2000. It seemed a bit clumsy to me compared to the older stuff.

Another less than spectacular review of GPL.
I'm telling you guys, this property is the most overrated wine in the Medoc.

Unfortunately, you are perhaps right, Jim. Grand-Puy-Lacoste once was one of my favourite clarets, but over the last two decades, one disappointment after another...

I don't really have the depth of experience when it comes to GPL that it sounds like some of you have but I can tell you with 100% certainty that the 2014 brings it. Having tasted it alongside the Purple Baron and Lynch Bages at this past years UGC I can safely report that it had equivalent depth and grip as those two except at roughly two-thirds the price and that is music to my ears.

I'm not sure I would go so far as to say GPL "is the most overrated wine in the Medoc". I don't have enough experience to judge GPL in vintages after 1996. But with limited samples, I haven't been particularly impressed with 2000-2010.

I won't be trashing GPL because I have had very positive results (in the context of each vintage) from:

1964
1966
1970
1978
1982
1986
1989
1990
1995
1996

Don't get me wrong. I thought this was a very good wine, and I did pop it with high expectations. There have been some notable successes over the years like 1982, 1990, 1995 and 1996, all performing well among their peers in these renowned vintages. In fact the 1995 is probably in the top handful of wines in that vintage on the left bank. What GPL probably ultimately lacks is the precision and complexity of the really great wines. The only time I had the 1978 I was very impressed. That was with BWE in Manhattan 11 years ago.

This wasn't a negative review, Jim! It was a positive one.

In five years the 2005 will beat all of these I think.
