Fabulous Leoville Las Cases Vertical in DC

Post by Winona Chief »

Great Leoville Las Cases vertical at Ripple in DC last week organized by Panos Kakaviatos. The wines were presented by Pierre Graffeuille, Director of Domaines Delon who flew to DC for the occasion. We sampled most of the best vintages of LLC between 1975 and 1996 (1975, 1982, 1986, 1989, 1990 and 1996) plus an assortment of other Delon wines (Nenin, Potensac, Clos du Marquis and Petit Lion). As usual, I neglected to take any tasting notes but I can easily say all of the LLCs were in perfect condition and were outstanding - like 94-98 points outstanding. I thought the 1990 was particularly outstanding and was impressed by how good the 1975 was. Also really like the 2001 Nenin.

For the tasting notes of others at the event see the thread on Wine Berserkers: http://www.wineberserkers.com/forum/vie ... 1&t=140197

Also see the write-up by Panos on his Wine Chronicles site:http://wine-chronicles.com/blog/high-cl ... las-cases/

Thanks Chris for sharing the links.

Seems like a great evening, where the wines were all delivering the goods. Had the 1975, 1982, 1989 and 1996 in the past, and I liked them all. other vintages I had and liked, than the ones that were at that tasting, the 1978, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1994, 1998, 2001 and 2004. I would say it is my favorite wine of Bordeaux because no failures in all these vintages.

I would like to taste 1986 and 1990 one day. Unfortunately, I was planning buying one or two 1990 for the Saturday night dinner in SF, but I hesitate too long and sold rapidly. I turned around on two bottles of 1990 Rauzan Ségla that were great anyhow.

I don't have lot of LLC bottles in my reserve. Would like to improve that, so we'll see what I can do in the future, as the prices are high for that excellent to almost perfect Saint-Julien.
