Earlier today on my way home, my girlfriend Ceil told me that she had picked up some baby lamb chops for dinner tonight. So as soon as I got home I popped my head into the eurocave to see what I had on hand as this development had ignited a craving for a Pauillac and I ended up going with the 1985 Lynch Bages. Folks, this wine is the real deal Holyfield with a soaring nose of black currant, cassis, earth, tobacco and lead pencil that gives way to a silky smooth, explosive red fruited and cedar driven palate that has great depth and richness of flavor with an iron tinged finish that pulls you in for another taste. 97 points and my wine of the year thus far and the reason why I drink Bdx, point final!

I bought a case of 1985 Lynch Bages because that is the year my son was born.
I finished the last bottle maybe 3 years ago. Quite a nice wine, but I felt there was not point ageing it further.
However, on the one hand plenty of people like their Bordeaux older than me and, on the other hand, a wine as fine as that will stay on its plateau for a long time.

A marriage made in heaven is Pauillac wine with Pauillac lamb, "agneau de Pauillac", which has its own AOC.

Great wine. It's fun to think about the great run of Lynchs from 1982-1990. I love them all ('84 and '87 excluded), and the '85 can hold its own with any in that string.

I just scored some of the '88 Lynch on auction, another LB that I think is really terrific in a refreshingly medieval style.

Lynch Bages and other great Medocs made great wines in the 1980s, and then Robert Parker's influence started to take over.
