Canada Turns 150 Tomorrow

Post by dstgolf »

As I look back to Expo 67 in Montreal when I was just 10 years old for Canada's centennial celebration it is unimaginable the expense the country went through and the debt Montreal took on to put on a world exposition showcasing the future. Many fond memories are still vivid visiting the exposition with my family for a week over that summer making the pilgramage to Montreal for our first time experiencing French Canadian culture and hospitality as a family. The crowds were huge and lineups long seeing the pavillions of the worlds nations getting an incite into worlds we'd only seen in the classrooms. The USA and Russian pavillions were flexing their muscles highlighting the space race and technology. France had a beautiful building which still stands today and has been converted to a casino. The grounds were reclaimed islands built in the St Lawrence that today hosts the annual Formula 1 race in Montreal. New highways were built and now crumbling along with Montreals state of the art subway system with trains on rubber wheels seems modern even by todays standard. It was a time of great country pride welcoming over 50 million visitors through Expo in a 6 month period for a country of 20 million seems unimaginable today let alone the expenditures almost bankrupting Quebec/Montreal.

Heading into tomorrows 150th festivities they will pale by comparison with ISIS threats and thunderstorms in the forecast. Economy weakened by the downturn in oil/resources along with weak cdn$ I'm sure has been part of the dampened celebrations across the country in comparison to our centennial. Only problem is most of my vintage if not all will not be around to see the 200th birthday!! Downtown Ottawa is already in gridlock today but tomorrow will become impassible if not impossible. No cars allowed in the downtown core and security is at an all time high that we have never witnessed before. I pray everything goes off without a hitch but regardless with the upcoming birthday it makes me proud to be Canadian and I'd like my BWE friends to have a toast raising a glass of something special to help us celebrate our 150th.

Happy 150th Birthday Canada!!!! :D

I too went to Expo 67 at about your age...

God bless Canada. A prosperous, non-threatening place that consistently has one of of the best images of any country in the world.

An *open*, welcoming country that embraces multi-culturalism.

A country that arguably défends the French language better than the French do.

A country of countless natural wonders.

J'aime. Beaucoup. :-)

All the best,
Alex

I remember watching a ballgame in that old Olympique Stadium which the Astroturf no self respecting dog would pee on.

We were right up on the third base line and saw Marquis Grissom (remember that speedster?!) tag up on 2nd base and reach 3rd, on infield popup where the 1st basemen turned his back on him when catching the ball.

I'd never seen anything like that in higher level baseball. Never seen it again since.

Will Clark was playing first when it happened and got a lot of crap for letting that happen, but who would expect anything like that.

He blamed it on the artificial surface.

I just watched a great little video on Facebook where a Canadian explained to his American neighbor just what Canada has to celebrate, including K'ehFC. :D

Yes Canada is a great, beautiful, welcoming, tolerant, prospere and amazing country. All we are missing is a few more Celsius!

Happy 150th to my country, and all the people in Canada that make it so great.

And of course, you're invited to visit anytime. Talking about that, dstgolf is ready to organize an offline in Ottawa. If any are interested, i could do it last weekend of July or second weekend of August.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. The rain has stopped. Prince Charles and Camilla have done there thing. Bono put on a wonderful short tribute to Canada and the the Irish immigrants who have added to our melting pot. Snowbirds(aeronautic synchro team aka Blue Angels) were late coming in because of the rain but were just over the house staging to put on a late show downtown for the crowd now that cloud cover has risen. So far a fun celebration. Nine holes between the drops this afternoon and now relaxing before the evening party.

Yes Nic it would be great to have an offline in Ottawa. Last weekend in July... 28-30th works best for me. Lets work on Jim and others to have a group meet in the Nations Capital during our 150th year!! If its good for you and Jim then we can hopefully attract a few others.

Happy Birthday Canada and fellow Canucks, the worst behaved contingent on the 2015 Tour!

Examples of bad Canuck behaviour on Tour:

1. Danny posing like a Roman Emperor on the floor of the vat room at La Conseillsnte with an empty imperial
2. Larry helping himself to a large top up of Haut-Brion at LMHB but the bottle was whisked away from him by Frau Whiplash
3. Nic trying to hit on the miserable blonde bombshell at Chateau Margaux!
