Have a safe Irma

Post by Nicklasss »

If possible. Hope our friends in Florida will be safe and without major issues. After Harvey in Texas, Irma seems to be destroying everything in the small Carabean Islands...

Be safe guys.

Parts of Puerto Rico are supposedly going to be without power for 4-6 months when its over. Their utility co's have no resources left to do anything.

Thanks, Nic.

I had to cancel a Bordeaux wine dinner scheduled for Saturday. I hope to make up for it soon.

The small home wine vault is the first thing I hook up to the portable generator when the power goes out.

Good luck Stu and Kathy. We hope Irma veers away from South Florida or there could be some significant issues come the weekend. Fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Stu/JAL

How did you both ride out the storm? I hope all went well but the early reports this morning show it was bad but could have been worse. Still too early to assess the extent of the damage from the wind and flooding. 6 million without power for days to weeks doesn't bode well for peoples wine cellars unless their generators kicked in like they are hoped to.

Lido key had a mandatory evacuation order. We drove (along with four million other Floridians it seemed) to Nashville.
We heard there is damage but as far as we know, no one has come around to check yet.
The important thing is that we're safe.
We had planned a road trip for this week by chance. We just didn't imagine we would travel with everyone and under these circumstances.
Hope for minimal damage and zero casualties.
Thanks for asking Danny

Lucky for me, no Nashville required.

No damage, no downed trees, yet somehow 68% of homes without power in my county, including mine.

Fortunately, portable generator works, so wine still chillin'.

Good luck, Jacques, you got hit the worst.

Glad to hear that our Floridians are safe if not completely sound.

Is your generator hooked up to natural gas, Stu?

We drove back last night, the area sustained a lot of damage but our place is ok, just a few downed trees around the building, a few fences torn down, and the pool in the complex has about a foot of sand in it.
Based on the clock on the microwave, we lost power for some time, either 10 hours, or 22 or 34 or 46. The water was not tested and it is recommended to boil it before drinking.
It feels like a desert town here so we're going to fly away tomorrow and head to the Rockies, maybe spend some time in Denver, and try to make it to Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

Jacques,

Nice to hear that your place survived on Lido Key but Florida I think is far from well. It will be interesting to see how quickly the power is restored and people get their lives back in order. I remember the temporary trailer camps they had in Punta Gorda a number of years ago that were there for about a decade. A long time to be uprooted from your home. Crazy weather and I don't think that its going to get better going forward. Makes me think twice about retiring in Florida as I think this is likely the beginning of worse to come! The boomers have been flocking to Florida and the growth there has been unbeliveable since the crash in 2008 taxing the infrastructure. Not sure what the outcome will be of this current disaster but I think there are likely pockets of very desparate people in the Keys and elswhere that we haven't heard the entire story and impact yet. Thankfully our BWE friends have come through relatively unscathed as long as SDRs generator doesn't run out of gas or get stolen!!

Power has been restored after 3 days. About 1/4 of the state is still without, though. My generator worked perfectly, using gasoline I stocked up on before the storm. It's only practical during the day, though, since it sounds like a 747 is landing on your lawn. My wine vault crept up to 68 degrees before settling down to 62 after being on for 8 hours, so I didn't lose anything, although I like to keep it at 52 degrees. Most of my stuff is in an off site professional storage facility with massive backup generators. But the generator is too weak to run A/C, water heater, stove or oven.

Glad to hear Jacques didn't have too much damage.

No doubt that Florida will eventually sink back into the ocean to join Atlantis. But we still have at least a few hundred years to go. It's only near the beach that floods badly at the present time. So Danny, come on down, the weather is great, no state tax, golf courses playable 12 months a year.

Sounds like you guys did pretty well given the dire predictions. Really good to hear.

Jacques, look me up if you're in Denver.

Yeah, we did dodge a bullet. I agree with Danny that it seems like we're all on borrowed time, and I had, like Stuart, the feeling that the state would soon become Atlantis.

So far it looks like most of the damage was inland though the power shutdowns have caused serious harm in Miami. I read that there was a tragedy in one nursing home and hopefully the extent of the damage in the Keys is only to property. The island of St Marteen appears to have seen extensive damage. Heartbreaking stuff all around.

Patrick, I'll contact you once we finalize our plans. It will be good to see you again.

With Tom and Gail in Denver these days, we can put together a mini BWE night in the Rockies pretty much anytime (vagaries of everyone's schedules notwithstanding).

Good to hear that everyone is ok. It could have been so much worse by all accounts.

Happy to read that the damages for floridian BWEers are limited.

There are still lots of damages in the State, but it could have been worst. Unfortunately, the climate specialists are predicting more storm like Irma in the future... so it won't be easy if it is the case.

We'll just have to choose the best season/time to go visit, when the risks are lower.

My family in Boynton, Tampa and Port St. Lucie survived without major incident. A friend on St. Martin has been suprisingly subdued on Facebook.
