2003 Moulin du Cadet and more...

Post by Rudi Finkler »

Moulin du Cadet, Saint-Emilion, was taken over by the Lefévère family of the neighbouring Château Sansonnet two years ago. Hopefully Moulin du Cadet the will not suffer the same fate as Cadet Piola, which was merged into Château Soutard in 2012...

The 2003 Moulin du Cadet, 100 Merlot, 13,5% alcohol, is one of the most elegant clarets I have had in recent times. There is absolutely no sign of over-ripeness, over-extraction or too much new oak, but a delicious mix of dried herbs, exotic spices, and pure complex berry fruit backed up by lovely supple tannins. The long spicy finish is impressive. This is a very classic claret.

The 2006 Chantelune, Margaux, 13% alcohol, made by José Sanfins, director of Cantenac Brown, plays in the same league as Moulin du Cadet. Elegant and very classic too, but in a completely different style. Fresh, juicy red and black fruits dominate on the palate, but with time, floral flavours, herbs, spices, leather, liquorice, and a hint of anis push the fruit slightly into the background. There is an excellent minerality and crispness in the ‘bold’ finish. This wine can easily compete with most of the more prestigious wines from this appellation. Chantelune is a tiny estate. Only about 400 cases are made annually

Remains to mention that the 2004 Langoa Barton, 13 % alcohol, is an opulently styled Saint-Julien, with great depth, complexity, and structure. Unfortunately, a touch of sweet, overripe fruit affects the overall impression, at least for me. Nevertheless a pleasure to drink.

As expected, the 2004 Le Sillage de Malartic, Pessac-Léognan, 13% alcohol, second wine from Château Malartic- Lagravière, is not quite as complex as the aforementioned wines, but very elegant, balanced, and delicious. Undoubtedly a real bargain for about €16. :-)
