TN 2001 Haut Brion

Post by jal »

We needed something special yesterday so with a sous vide rack of lamb, creamed kale and roasted potatoes, we opened this half bottle of the 2001 Haut Brion.

I had doubts because I have quite mistreated it. I bought it on release but after downsizing in 2013, it stayed, along with other first growth splits in the bottom of a cupboard in my Tel Aviv apartment with no a/c. Three months ago, I decided to bring it, along with two splits of 2001 Lafite and three splits of 2001 Latour, back to the US.

So I was curious as to how it would perform, it was actually amazing! Dark color, nice nose, massive fruit, very concentrated and layered with no obvious manipulation or extraction. Smooth and long on the finish, we loved it. 95, but not sure if better treated examples would also be just as giving.
Best

Nice! A well stored bottle might indeed need more time.

Good deal. I had the 2001 La Mission about four years ago and it showed well after a year of uncontrolled storage in Hawaii (perhaps similar temps) and impressed me as having the stuff to age longer and probably evolve favorably.

I'm happy for you. I'm a scientific guy, but it is hard to figure out any science behind wine aging.

Maybe the splits are ok to drink now. Not much split offered here.

We'll miss you in DC. I need to figure out a way to go to Florida.

Sayonara.
