Decant Advice: Clos L’Eglise 2008

Post by dragzworthy »

Pretty much all the information is in the title. I’m new on this board but have silently browsed for a while. Just wondering if you could lend some advice on how long to decant a bottle of Clos L’Eglise 2008 for? I’m planning on double decanting in order to take out to someone’s place.

Welcome dragz, I don't know how long to decant it but I do know that's a great wine.

Thanks Jim. I bought half a case so I can admittedly get one or two wrong ;$

I have not tried that wine but I would not decant it. More often than not I find that young wines of quality close down with air, not open up.

agreed with this. Decanting is really a double edged sword, especially for young wines.

I open them and see how they are doing. If shut down tighter than a drum I decant. If not I recork until ready to drink for dinner/other. Pouring a glass and recorking probably my commonest process seeing how the wine progresses over an hour or so before dinner. If it improves in the glass I decant to speed things along. I must say I haven't had an issue with a young wine shutting down on me with prolonged air exposure. Certainly watched old wines crash and burn with air but not young Bordeaux.

Jim has no need to, young Barde Haut is generally good right out of the bottle

I like to open such a young wine 6 hours before dinner and might recork depending on how it tastes. If I open it shortly before dinner I usually decant. Sometimes I just pour it through a aerater.

If it's a weekend young wine, I'll splash into the decanter, especially if its something as fancy as a Clos l'Eglise. (Don't think I've had any of their new efforts, but their 95 was nothing exciting)

A little air isn't going to hurt a vigorous, rich young Bordeaux
