Anyone buying 2015 red burgs?

Post by Blanquito »

Sounds like 2015 is a great year for red burgundy, perhaps akin to 2005. I wouldn’t mind getting a few of these, especially <$50 options, anyone here buying or trying?

I am also in the same boat as you, Blanquito. Looking for good 2015s for reasonable prices. So far I bought 3 bottles of 2015 Givry 1er Clos Salomon (after trying one bottle, which was great although it took couple of hrs to open up) under 30 bucks, and bought one bottle of 2015 Angerville Champans for 100 all in, at an auction...

Looking for some more, especially from GC and CM...

I bought a half a case of my favorite semi-affordable red burg, 2015 Bouchard Le Corton at $100/each and then called it quits. That's a reliably wonderful Burg for me and I am trying to cut back on purchases so didn't want to dive into the vintage with both feet.

I have a few Patrick, but nothing very expensive or ‘Grand’

I agree it is a terrific vintage for reds. I find some of the whites a little too heavy in the saddle

I still think about that 2005 d’Angerville Volnay that Jim brought to NYC in 2008 or 2009, incredible stuff.

To be honest, I don’t focus much on vintage in red burgundy, I prefer to go with the producers I like.
Angerville
Bachelet
Mugnier
And a bunch of others. Can’t see anyone going wrong with these even in so-called mediocre vintages aka 2007

Yeah, got those 2005 d'Angervilles and other 2005 Burgs at insane prices in NH, Patrick, like $35 per bottle.

I just bought Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 2015. It was a blind purchase and don't know how good it is yet

I have no discipline so I indulged in buying these 2015 burgundies and failed to limit my purchase to less than 182 bottles. Main producers were Barthod (all 11 wines), Mugneret Gibourg (all 9 wines), Dominique Laurent and Fourrier. I also got some Roumier and Bart. Also a bunch of Confuron Gindre, the rest spread on a few bottles per producer (Mugnier, Clavelier, Taupenot Merme, Montille, Lamarche...).
I have now decrased a lot in 2016 and intend to refrain myself in 2017.

To quote a well-known personality around here: Well done, Antoine. Very well done indeed!

I’m sorely tempted to buy a case or so of 2015 Burgs but have so far maintained my resolve.

Mmm, very nicely done indeed, Antoine.
I too have been considering getting a mixed case or two of 2015 Burgundy.
How does the vintage compare to 2005 and other vintages in the past 15 years?

2015 probably not quite the density of 2005 and a warmer vintage... but probably the closest to 2005 in the 2000s. Like 2005, regional and villages over performed so may be a good idea to buy if you can find them at decent prices.

I haven’t tried a single 2015, but what I’ve heard in the street jives with Antoine’s take. Supposed to a great vintage for village wines in particular.

Anyone have a favorite, readily-found (in US) village wine to suggest?

Reviews of the 2015s have made them sound more 2009-ish than like 2005. Warm and rich rather than structured and big, but also solid structure under the fruit.

People are also going with the ever popular "hypothetical blend of 2009 and 2005"...I have learned to mistrust the hypothetical super-vintage line.

The 2015 red Burgundies I have tasted are very fruity and quite delicious. Almost everything I have tried has been less than $50 - Givry, Mercurey, Fixin, Bourgogne, Savigny les Beaune, Marsannay, etc. Mostly from MacArthur in DC. They are all good. There is a lot of excellent relatively inexpensive ($20 - $50) 2015 red wine from all over Europe. Had a fabulous 2015 Ripasso Valpolicella at Gramercy Tavern last Thursday.

I've bought 2015 Oregon PN, but no 2015 Burgundy. Most 2012 and 2014 OR PN are in a dumb phase, but the 2015s I have tried are fruity and pleasant to drink. Lucie and I are drinking mostl OR PN this summer, although we did drink a lovely 2002 Drouhin Clos Vougeot the other night.

This.

My wine buying "freeze" is in constant jeopardy, there are so many affordable, delicious, European wines from 2014-2016 for sale right now (especially from France: champagne, northern Rhone, Loire reds and whites, Bandol, red and white Burgundy, Beaujolais, and of course Bordeaux are all beckoning to me).

I have the same affliction :) Hard to keep your hands off these wines. 15-16 in southern Rhone is wonderful even at the basic levels. Drink your 2016 Cotes du Rhones while the 15's soften a bit. The couple of basic 2015 Bourgognes I've had a chance to taste are great for drinking now, but will be good for a few years. I've found an entry level Bordeaux wine that is really enjoyable at about $14-15. How can one complain? I've also had a few 2015 bottles from the Loire and Languedoc (names not recalled) that were great value wines. Hard to go wrong.

I think you've gotten off track, Blanquito - the expensive wines are "investments" and the cheaper ones are "cellar defenders." No need to ever feel guilty about buying wine.

What about 2014 red Burgundy? The whites are great in 2014.

Burgundy hasn't had a bad vintage since the green 2004 and the overripe 2003. And even in those two years, one could find really good wines with a little homework. The 2003 Bruno Clavelier Combe d'Orveaux was one of my all time favorites, in 2004 Rousseau Charmes Chambertin was amazing.
You guys are too fixated on vintages.

I’m sure you’re correct Jacques. Producer over (most) vintages any day.

That said, vintage hype is fun and it gets me to venture outside of my comfort zone via-a-vis regions and varietals. Plus, there are some extraordinary vintages where most of us really love the style (say, ‘82 Bordeaux) AND the average estate way overachieves (providing a bevy of under the radar, QPR opportunities that make branching out easier).

And specifically, 2015 in France seems to be really in a zone for my palate, where a bunch of board darlings (other boards) have finally lived up to the hype. The love for wines like Baudry Chinon, Thivin Beaujolais, and Faury St Joseph makes sense in 2015, after years of leaving me less than thrilled in prior vintages.

I suppose my palate could be changing, but I think it’s the year. Hence my interest in 2015 red burg!

IMO 2015 is nothing like 2005. I would think 2002 is the closest recent vintage to 2015.
The 2015 red wines are sumptuous and long, but there is decent tannin lurking beneath the bountiful fruit. Many of the growers in Burgundy think these wines will really clamp down hard for close to a decade in the not-too-distant future, and I tend to agree. Drinking them "on the fruit" right now is an absolute pleasure, but my guess is that 15 years from vintage, they will be quite stellar, as so many 2002's are presently.
OTOH, 2005 is a fiercely tannic vintage, but being a solar year, they have plenty of high-quality fruit and the wines should eventually come around. 2018 is not really a good time to try these wines, most of which are closed, tannic and uninteresting. Even most villages wines are still way too young. I believe they might be drinking from about 2025 onwards, but the best of the GC's might take a further decade to fully show their wares. Interesting that d'Angerville's 2005 Clos des Ducs showed well in 2009, it had not yet closed down. I saw this same wine in HK at prowein last year, and it was tight as a drum, completely unyielding, and in need of another 15 years minimum.

this is so true. I don't like any 2004's, but since that vintage the Cote d'Or has been on a stupendous roll. I was one of those numb-skulls who declared 2011 horrible back in it's infancy, but so many wines from that vintage are showing beautifully now. I love the 2013's, pure and true to terroir if not of great density, and 14-16 are a magnificent trio of vintages.
producer micro-management is the antithesis of Bordeaux, and therefore vintage variation is far less important in this region.
