How does March 28-31 in Denver sound for BWE '19?

Post by JimHow »

Usually we like to get at least 30 people together for these annual events.
When are the religious holidays in 2019?
Any other potential scheduling conflicts?
Any major conventions/sporting events going on in Denver that weekend?
I would still like to get more thoughts on the logistics involved in scheduling these free-for-alls in Denver, where corkage is not permitted.

The dates I'm looking at right now are:

Thursday, March 28, 2019
Friday, March 29, 2019
Saturday, March 30, 2019
Sunday, March 31, 2019

Sincerely,
BD

Easter is April 21, so you're clear on that dimension. Passover begins April 19.

The State of California will observe Cesar Chavez day on March 31, which will not affect most people.

Nuggets are home that weekend as well.

I think it's a good idea to get the dates set this far in advance - really helps planning my calendar. I'm in for this and probably Marjorie as well.

Tom In DC wrote:After 18 months living here (and seeing Blanquito work his magic), I'm confident we can make Denver work.

Most folks' impression of Denver weather is based on a memory of blowing snow on TV during a September Monday Night Football game. :o Regarding temperatures and climate, my experience with Denver (though we've only lived here 18 months, I've been traveling here reqularly for 25+ years) is that the temperature is almost the same as DC. (NOAA data below bears this out.) The key is that with Denver's low humidity, it's always more comfortable in Denver than the same temp would be in DC!

There will be lots of hiking opportunities at that time. By April 1st the snow is only in the high country.

City/Month__ Hi _ Low
Denver
February ___ 49° _ 21°
March _____ 58° _ 29°
April ______ 65° _ 35°
May _______ 73° _ 44°

Washington DC
February __ 47° _ 27°
March _____ 56° _ 35°
April ______ 67° _ 44°
May _______ 76° _ 54°
Well this makes sense. The talk of skiing had me thinking we’d be sliding around on ice and snow to get to the events. Now that I’ve been educated, count Peggy and me in. (Assuming "high country" in Tom's post refers to elevation, not the pot laws.)

I'm in. Not sure about the SO.

I'd be up for skiing too - I have a pass for Copper/WinterPark/Steamboat plus I get some Ski With a Friend Discounted buddy passes too for interested persons.

Day Passes at the Vail complex have hit the ~$200/day rate which makes it crazy for walk up purchases.

Most likely I'd hit the mountains first and then meet up for BWE Saturday night festivities.

DEN is a pretty winter resistant airport, but I recommend direct flights if people can get them.

My belief is that connections in winter time, or late afternoon summer squall season in the Northeast, don't merely double the chance of a travel hiccup -- I feel its exponential.

I just checked and Colorado vote Democrats in 2016. This is a positive.

Blanquito and Tom are located in Denver. Many BWEers already confirmed. Another positive.

I've never been to Colorado.Another positive.

But Trump still President. A negative.

BWE 2019 in competition with a possible trip to Spain. A negative.

Marie-Claude not sure to come as my parents will be in Spain and can't kindergarden the kids. A negative.

Tough decision...

Well done, RPCV, very well done indeed!

Man, you guys who make other vacation plans before the BWE convention is scheduled. Which, by the way, is on the SAME end-of-March weekend every year!

We will miss you, Nicola, but I'm sure Spain will be spectacular. That country is high on my list of next destinations.

Things look like a go, Patrick/Tom.
And so I place it in your hands:

By the powers granted to me by myself as the Kind and Benevolent Dictator of Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts, "the greatest wine web site in the world," I hereby decree that the 19th annual BWE convention shall be in Denver, Colorado, USA, on the weekend of March 28-31, 2019.

So it is written. So it shall be done.

Sincerely,

Is it safe to buy air tickets and prepay rooms now?

My real question is whether I can go ahead and make commitments for other weekends.

Hehehe. It's surprising what BWE'ers will get up to!

We have ski passes for Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Winter Park, Copper Mountain, etc., etc., etc., so we'll go wherever others want to slide. Our house is about 1 hour from Winter Park, Copper, Breck, and Keystone; Vail and BC are a bit farther.
