Long day in a suppression hearing for an alleged drug dealing client named Johnny Walker (I kid you not), let's see how this little filly is doing....

Illegal contreband scotch dealer you mean.

Is that 2000 Sociando any better than the 2000 La Lagune?

love love love Sociando 2000.

Actually my favorite vintage of Sociando in the sense of the bottle I had the most sheer pleasure drinking, even if I think/hope 2005 might eventually surpass it.

"You rang?"

Said, of course, in the immortal voice of Lerch.

But I am not going out on a lurch by saying this:

The 2000 Sociando is the finest Sociando in the last 20 years, equaled only by 2014. I guess that's not the most profound statement given how incredibly consistent this estate is year in and year out, but these two vintages are a small notch above, and right smack in my wheelhouse. I've gone through tons of 2000 and keep backfilling. It's excellent. Amazing how Sociando controlled the ripeness of 2000 to craft a wine that is incredibly balanced and runs the full range of the fruit color spectrum, including a wonderful Chinon-like streak of green. If anyone is a fan of 2000, stock up big on 2014. I bought more 2014 Sociando than anything else from that excellent vintage.

I wonder if 2005 will ultimately edge them all, but it just needs so much time, so I cannot assess it clearly enough right now.

Had an excellent 375ml bottle of the 2003 last night. It's in a fine spot.

Sociando is like the comfortable old pair of Levis that makes my ass look just perfect. A stalwart in an era of stylistic change in Bordeaux. We used to be able to count on Lanessan as well.

I'm drinking a 2009 Raffault Chinon Les Picasses right now, so classic.

PS. The 2003 is a really good Sociando, but I would not call it a classic Sociando. It's as California as Sociando will ever get, and frankly, one of the better 2003s. I still think 1990, which shares some parallels to 2003, is a better wine.

Orlando Bobby!!
Great to hear from you!
I agree with you, that 2014 northern Medoc vintage is tremendous.
I’ve really enjoyed that 2000 Sociando, I give it a slight nod over the also great 2003.
I’ll be spending some time in Florida this winter....

1982 SM is my benchmark. I don't have any 2000, but I have some 2003, so glad to hear it is drinking well.

My favorite Sociandos for current enjoyment:
1982 (for correct bottles -- I've had a few recently that were musty and dank despite good fills, corks, etc.)
1990
1996
1995
2000
2003
2001

At least up to now, the 1990 runs circles around the 2003 for my money. After trying a bottle on release, I bet long on the 03 that it would become another 1990. I haven't lost all the faith yet (but the doubts are gathering), and I still have a boatload of it I'm sitting on in the cellar.

Let marc and me know if you will be in or near Orlando. Would love to take you out, ply you with good food and booze, regale you with tales of my legal escapades, and Marc’s too lol, and then introduce you to our favorite waiter, Rocky! He prefers fine Bordeaux straight out of the bottle.

BobbyOrlando!

Good call on the 2014 SM...I've got (6) bottles. or at a least I did until last Saturday. Lisa and I got home late, but she wanted a glass of wine (which turned into 2)...she just said "red", and "french". Completely unprepared for the request I opened the wine unit door, grabbed something from the middle rows....2014 Sociando-what the hell! While young, it was truly remarkable-hopefully Total Wine has it in stock when I go by there later this week.

I don’t think TW has it, but they do have the 2014 Lanessan. I stocked up big on it as well. So while Lanessan may be moving to the dark side, this vintage with its red profile and acid work. A steal at $20 and right now their 20% off coupons are floating around.

Our palates are different, but I think the 2003 is as good as the 1990, and realistically going forward, would rather own the 2003, esp if buying at current prices.

2000 tastes a little too cool to me. I guess its time to try it again.

I think I saw 2015 at $38 recently, which doesn't seem much more than the $30 I paid for the 1996 on release.

Some estates are still very attainable for enthusiasts, fortunately.

I like the 03 Sociando a lot, it’s very good (91-92 pts), but for me the 90 has an extra wow factor (93-94 pts) that the 03 has yet to develop (let’s face it, in this era of scoring compression, 2 pts is significant).

Now that could just be the full maturity of the 90 talking, and the 03 gets there in time. But if so, the 90 has been fully mature since at least 2010 when it wowed the table at a Fabio’s gathering.

Overall, I far prefer 1990 Bordeaux to 2003, but Sociando marches to its own beat.

European Wine Resource has four remaining at $30, which is still quite a deal:

https://www.europeanwineresource.com/we ... w=Sociando

I grabbed my last batch recently at the very surprisingly low price of $28, which is are or close to what I paid in futures.

That's the after-party with Rocky. I did not want to scare the fearless leader before he even gets down here.
