BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
This thread will serve to get the Thursday night event organized over the next few months. We have a private room at a nice place with no bottle limit and a la carte access to the menu. Including tip, tax, etc, it’s usually right about $100/each.
I am a big fan of the Thursday night events at the Convention as we get warmed up for the larger gatherings. These are typically small enough we can all taste the same wines and have fun doing a blind flight (like that epic flight of 1989 Pichon Lalande, Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages), etc. I propose starting things off with a flight of serious champagne, and then we can go from there.

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Love the Thursday night dinners.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Bordeaux from years ending in nine? This is a good time to drink the 99's as well as 89's and 79's. Wish I had some 59's.
Or are we doing something similar on Saturday?

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I am certainly in for Thursday night. Marjorie is likely to participate as well. As to theme, I'm fine with years ending in 9. I do have some 1979s left and many of the 1999s are in a good place now. Probably better to leave 1989 for Saturday night.

Since vintages ending in ‘9 are for Saturday, how about those ending in ‘0? 1970, 80, 90, 00, and 10. I’m sure we’re all deep in many of those years. I’ve got some strong wines from 1970 and some 1980 Bordeaux is surprisingly good.
Or those years ending in ‘8? 1968, 78, 88, 98, 08?

Hi Patrick
Maureen and I would be up for that. I like the idea of doing a number theme. Would it be Bordeaux only?
Cheers

I’m along with whatever you want.
I just want to find out if the wines taste different in Denver.

They do, they taste better!
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Updated the list...
Most Thursday Conventions dinners I’ve been too have had a Bordeaux theme for the reds at least, as Friday is anything but Bordeaux. But I’m good with any theme, even just “great wine and bubbly”. Or we could pick a vintage and say any wines from that year. Whatever you guys like. Ted’s cellar is quite strong in mature Rioja.

I will talk to the boss. We should be in town at Linda's cousin's place on that day so the question is, can I tolerate 3 days of abuse? I'm sure my cardiologist will say no, but you only live twice.

Keep us posted, Bill. Plenty of room, it would be great to have you join in. If not, we’ll see you on Friday.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I plan to fly in Thurs, late morning/mid afternoon, if that works.Blanquito wrote:This thread will serve to get the Thursday night event organized over the next few months. Who’s in? From other threads, here’s what I’ve gathered so far. Chime in if you’d like to participate and with theme ideas (things like, all 1990; 83 vs 85; a Lynch Bages vertical; Pauillac; Pomerol; et cetera).
DEFINITIES
Stefan and Lucie
JimHow
Patrick and Brendan
Chris and Marjorie
Ian and Maureen
Ted
I can offer up a mini-vertical of Vilmart: 00' vintage Couer, NV Grand Cellier (70% chard/30% pinot), NV Grand Reserve (70% pinot/30% chard), and Rubis (Rose) to contrast against a mini-vert of Krug: 98' Vintage, MV 163/164, NV Rose. (these are in my cellar, so I hope
they survive the holidays)
As to bordeaux, I could do 9's: I have 79' (4 or 5 varying bottles: Leoville P, Gloria, Montrose...), skip the 89's (I plan to bring 2x Leoville Las Cases for Sat), 99's: Lafite in mag., bunch of other stuff). flexible.
If we dont want bdx I can do N. Rhone (Lalas) or Burg (village people: 03 Dujac Gevrey, 03' Perdix Vosne, 07 G. Roumier Chambolle)
Early, but trying to gauge interest in how much and what to bring. I'm a newbie to this.
Kind regards- Gene
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
It will be good to meet you, Gene. We generally drink mostly Bordeaux on Thursday and Saturday and ABB (anything but Bordeaux) on Friday. On Friday I'll bring Burgundy.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Hi Gene, I’ve got you on the Thursday list, looking forward to meeting you too. We can start whenever we want that night as we have a private room.
In terms of wine, what Stefan said. Northern Rhônes and Burgs will be most welcome on Friday! For Thursday, a flight of champagne sounds great, but we can’t let you bring 6-7 bottles of bubbly alone AND red wine. We’ll figure it out, but I will say that Krug tastes extra good at elevation.

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Bump.
We are now 18 for Thursday with 1 on the waitlist (see updated list at top), which is all the private room for that night can hold.
If I hear soon that more BWEers want in for this, I can look for a larger venue (or add to the waitlist). Otherwise we are set for Thursday!

Man this convention is turning epic.
I count 19 in that list.

Oops, you’re right, we have 19 — I’ll put Ryan as the first alternate on the waitlist.

Hi blanquito.
Have you decided the theme for Thursday? Got to prepare ahead to make sure i have or can find something that fit.

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Just bring some Champange, Bordeaux, and/or Sauternes.
Like we do EVERY Thursday night dinner.
We don't need to overthink this.

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I’m good with a free form around champagne-bordeaux-Sauternes, as Jim said. If folks want to announce in advance, we can keep track in this thread to help synergize the selection. Any nominations?
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
With 18 we might want to have two bottles of at least some wines. Usually we have around 10 at Thursday dinners.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I think we’ll be closer to 14-15 for Thursday. Need to update the list. Still, enough that multiple bottles could be nice.
Unless there are objections, I’m gonna bring some 89s, I am happy to have them both Thursday and Saturday!

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
So, anybody start to announce some wines for that mysterious Thursday dinner?
Nic
P.s. Gene, even if young, that magnum of 1999 Chateau Lafite Rothschild would surely make it ways to many wine glasses that night...

Hi guys. Ok JeanFred and me will start the fun:
2 bottles of 1990 Chateau Pape Clément for Thursday night.
What else?

Well done, Nic and JeanFred! I’ve always wanted to try the 90 Pape Clement.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I'm happy if you're happy blanquito! The 1990 Chateau Pape Clément is a great wine and probably in the perfect spot. No need of 5 more years.

1982 Certan de May.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
Hi Jim. i'll look forward a sip of the 1982 Certan de May as the only time I had it was in the fall 2002, in Indianapolis, courtesy of Whuzzup_.
Blanquito, we have the same type of thinking I guess, as I almost choose the 1985 Pichon Lalande instead of the 1990 Pape Clément for Thursday.

I will come up with a few suggestions over the next few days, Patrick in conjunction with the theme. Sorry been snowed.

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
At first I thought about bringing 99s to celebrate their 20th, but inasmuch the focus seems to be on wines that are more mature I decided on
1983 Latour
1983 Lynch-Bages
plus something from the 1970s.

1983 would have been a great theme to mystify everyone? Looking forward to it.

I am the patron saint of 1983. I can revise my choices should we decide to make that the theme or a sub theme! I have quite a few worthy choices.
Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I also love 83s and have drunk many over the years; so many, in fact, that I have few left. Early on I did not expect them to be so good after 30 years--how wrong I was.

Re: BWE Denver, Thursday March 28 - who’s in?
I think 1983 is a good idea for one of the themes for Thursday night. I'll check around when I get back home. Been busy this weekend drinking nice wines with JohnZ (Gary Rust) and the Minneapolis wine crew.
One other thing, Marjorie will not be able to make it to the Thursday night dinner. She will be busy with the grandchildren and won't make it to the convention until Friday.
