2009 Haut Bergey

Post by DavidG »

Liked this a lot more than the 2010 version. Still young but a lot more potential.
  • 2009 Château Haut-Bergey - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (12/27/2018)
Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour. Not much change since last bottle 2.5 years ago. Dark red core, minimal lightening at the rim. Still young but really nice. Cherry, herbs, oak and good Graves-y stoniness on the nose. Forward ripe fruit backed up with mellow tannins, good balance, medium to full body, medium finish. Tannins get a little more aggressive after an hour. On the modern side of the spectrum but not flabby or spoofy. Enjoyable now but probably better to hold another 10 years to wait for complexity. Excellent.

waiting for the complexity.
You may be waiting for Godot, DavidG.
Having said that, I have few complaints about Haut Bergey, it almost always provides good fruit -- if not profundity -- consistently in the $20-something price range.

They don’t all get there and this one may not, but that’s ok. As Francois used to say, it’s performing as expected.

This is way better than any $20 wine. Also way better than $33, which is what I paid for it pre-arrival.
