That 1970 Chateau Pedesclaux

Post by Bordhead2000 »

Welp, nothing ventured nothing gained. The cork had failed and this wine had oxidized. The nose was of raisins. Terrible mouth feel and horrible acidity. Pictures and more detail on my blog.

Even if the cork had been sound, the wine might have been disappointing.

Damn shame...always wanted to try this producer
..fairly reasonable tariff for the newer vintages

True, AKR. You never know what you're going to get (didn't Forrest Gump say that?). Still, I think for the price I would give this one more shot if the fill was excellent.

Robert Goulet -- yep. I think the new ownership is trying really hard to produce quality wines. I've read good things about Pedesclaux from 2000 on. I'll definitely pick some early 2000's up if I can find them.

Cheers!

New ownership, and the consultant, Emmanuel Cruse, who turned round Chateau D'Issan. Not sure when the takeover happened, but seem to remember somewhere around 2008. Under the previous regime, wines well worth avoiding.

I have had very good luck with 1970 red Bordeaux so far this month. After a wonderful 1970 La Mission early in the month, had a a young and impressive 1970 Montrose last Friday. It had lots of sediment and tasted more like Northern Rhone than Bordeaux - kind of makes you wonder.

The 1970 Talbot we also had last Friday was in great shape and tasted like classic old Bordeaux. It was very smooth and had a complex, intriguing aroma. Perhaps a bit past peak but not showing any off flavors or aromas.

Hi Chris,

I had a 1970 Montrose at the end of February that was glorious. Super velvety tannins and wonderful flavors. It had a fill at high-mid shoulder. What was the fill on yours? I have one more in my cellar with a fill at the base of the neck, but I haven't decided when I will open it -- it'll be this year though, for sure.

Can you imagine what this wine must have been like in 1976 during the Judgement of Paris? Must have been a tannin monster.
