1982 Chateau Beychevelle

Post by Bordhead2000 »

This, to me, is an example of an old bdx that seems really young. The dark berries were not hidden, and tannins were still very grippy, but in a good way. I loved it. It must have a lot of life left in the cellar.

Drank mine up a while ago, but every one was better than the one before. A really nice Bordeaux. And under $20 back in the day.

I’ve had this 6-7 times in the last 4-5 years, and it has ranged from very good to truly outstanding.

David, as I recall Beychevelle was about $12.00. Lynch Bages about $14.00. Gruaud Larose was $20.00. The 1st growth probably $35.00.

Sounds about right WilliamP. I was a bit late to the game and paid $40-45 for the first growths. They were soooo expensive I couldn’t justify more than 3 or 4 bottles of a few of them.

Given 8% returns on average, the future value of $12 in 1982 would be $207 today. With the cost of storage, and considering the time-value of money, $200 is exactly the right price to pay for a very good bottle of 1982 Fourth Growth Bordeaux in 2019!

Very encouraging, Blanquito. I'm thinking I'll go back to the well on this again. It was very enjoyable, and I think well stored bottles are going to perform well for a few years yet.

Nice note Bdxhead and 1980’s Beychevelle is indeed where it is at!

Beychevelle was on a run through the 1980s - they made very fine wines in 1982, 1985, 1986 and 1989. I also liked their 1970, 1971 and 1973 back in the day.

After going through a case of '75 Beychevelle in half bottles, I can tell you that that was one tough cookie! Certainly more vintage than producer in this case.
