BWE Convention Denver 2019 Collaborative Photo Album

Post by AKR »

I set up a Google Photos Album where people can upload pictures if they want as well as comment.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/SuQPqo9HdwYrKJN7A

If one is already using Gphoto it should be especially easy to attach pix into the album.

Iphotos might have a few more steps, perhaps involving a real upload.

I have not yet scrubbed/cropped/balanced the pix, and will do those over the next few days.

Ok, so all the pictures from the other thread are now in the album (still uncropped, unbalanced, unadjusted etc. which pains my high school yearbook editor heart) and even though the album settings are to automatically order the pictures by the time they were taken -- which it mostly is doing -- its not doing it totally correctly. Looking at the supplementary info on the pictures (there appear to among more than a half dozen cameras/phones contributing) I think its related to how they are timestamp formats. So iPhone XE seems to do something subtly different than iPhone 7 which is different than my LG etc. And thus the pictures are not as precisely ordered as they ought to be.

If you are have questions just let me know.

PS: pix are now edited and reordered. amusingly, the crookedness needed more adjustments as the night went on....

I finally pulled my notes from the Saturday night dinner. I think I was one few who took notes, but of course in anything like this - with large quantities of wines sampled (and consumed!) - the accuracy starts to fade as the night goes on. I missed many wines as well.

Overall - like many folks here, I've had many of these a few times over the years, so skipped some estates which were well known, saving my liver/brain power for the curiosities/rarities. But there were lots of names I'd never tried before. I also had a sip of the bubbly but mostly passed on those too; I can't seem to 'see' the full range of flavors in that category that fans do. (Although Mrs AKR does identify/enjoy the good ones). Generalizing: 1989 was a grippy vintage when young but now, by age 30, nearly all the estates seemed well resolved and sweet. What little I had in my cellar was likely gone by age 15-20 or so. So it was fun to revisit a forgotten friend.

I started with the 2001 Malarctic Graviere 'blanc' [Pessac] which I not tasted since release. I remember this being still vibrant, even glycerin filled. I don't normally like white Graves but this was fine.

Pomerols

Vieux Chateau Certain - cool, minty
Petrus - long depth, menthol notes, then some tomato
Fleur de Gay - cool, austere
Le Gay - nutty, mature, burly
95 Certan de May - balanced, tasty

St Emilion

Figeac - didn't stick out to me
Tertre Rotebouef - I liked this. excellent, coconuts, exotic
Angelus - from magnum - excellent all around
Magdelaine - some VA here
Canon - good color, smooth, refined

St Estephe

Montrose - intensely concentrated and rich

Margaux

Palmer - funky, some dirt here
Rauzan Segla - sampled both bottles but neither stuck out

Pauillac

Lynch Bages (magnum) - superb
Pichon Lalande - one of the rare tannic wines
86 Pichon Lalande - I liked this better than the 89, amazing depth
Pichon Baron - rich and dense, shows red fruit to me
Grand Puy Lacoste - I liked this, writing down 'yum!'
Haut Bages Liberal - austere among this pantheon

St Julien

Talbot magnum - tasted, but I didn't note anything
Gruaud Larose (was this a mag too?) - I liked this a shade better than the Talbot
Leoville Las Cases - saline and celery

Graves

La Mission Haut Brion - superb in every way, not smoky or charry at all
Haut Bailly - tasted, but I didn't notate anything

Sauternes

Yquem - intense yet light bodied in a good way
59 Yquem - a touch acidic to me
de Fargues - thicker, darker than the Y
86 Raymond Lafon (mag) - quite good, never had this before

Ringer: a Rolland malbec called Yocachuya from 2003. It was ok but felt gooey among this lineup, still primary at age 16.

My favorites were Angelus, LMHB, Montrose and the Le Gay.

Thanks everyone for sharing such great wines and good cheer. I look forward to seeing everyone again next time around!

It was a very tough one in Denver. Tough = perfect = dream = great company = not enough time.

Let me know ahead if you do an offline in Denver in the next months. I will surely consider attending as the flights with the time change make it very easy. I need more time with that super enthusiast Denver group (Ted, Steeve, ...). I would consider going even if you do a 2013 horizontal tasting!
