Chateau Figeac 1995

Post by Comte Flaneur »

Yesterday I opened a half bottle of this, and guess what? It needs Blanquitoing, but the rewards will be great for the patient. The cork sheared but it was a great bottle, the 50th anniversary bottle for the legendary Thierry Manoncourt.

Notes of dark chocolate, bell pepper, earth, plummy fruit, olive tapenade, cool menthol leafiness, fungal undergrowth, spice-box and plethora of herbs, with a pervasive puritanical stoicism and austerity which is quite a turn on, especially I would imagine for those harbouring masochistic tendencies. If you have bottles and want to drink one I would recommend a long decant, otherwise hold because it will keep going for decades.

The Puligny was super as well.

Seems like every time I open a 1995 of any of the grand wines, and say the same thing, “needs more time”.

Thanks for taking one for the team!

Ahhh I remember that special label. Those 95 right banks have drunk so well their whole life, and just don't seem to lose any fruit.

I find the difference vs. the Medocs of the same year to be so striking.
