TN: 1989 Conseillante

Post by brodway »

One of the tastiest Bordeauxs i've ever drank. The aromas of the fruit that emanate from the glass is nothing short of enticing. Tremendous depth of fruit here with sweet blueberry and plum flavors with a twist of smoke and chocolate truffle notes. The body is just right and the wine tip toes though the palate in a deceivingly easy way. Tannin almost completely gone now. This should be a fan favorite for Pomerol die hards. Quintessential right bank blend. Drink them now if you have them. 96 points.

The 1990 Conseillante is also fantastic. I had the pleasure of drinking them side by side when Rob Dayton brought them to dinner at my house a couple of years ago.

1989 and 1990 Chateau la Conseillante: one of the strongest duo in red Bordeaux.

I slightly preferred the 1990 in the past, but the 1989 is so generous, complex and tremendous too.

Yeah we had them side by side out back on Stefan and Lucie's deck a couple years back, they were both a-smokin'.
From the cellar of Rob/Sue Dayton.

Thanks for the note, 89 and 90 two superb right bank reds.
Amazingly, the 09 and 10 are almost an identical duo twenty years after those. I would expect both of the young Conseillante vintages to be at least as equally impressive as their older siblings in another 20 years.
La Conseillante remains amongst my favourite RB Chateaux, indeed, one of the best in all of Bordeaux. However, it remains to be seen what will happen to the cost, quality and style under the new owners. I fear it will become too expensive for the average Bordeaux lover. :(

The 1980s was a magical decade for La Conseillante. In their youth wines of innocence and precociousness. Even the 1981 punched levels above its weight, and the 1986 that Tim brought to London a year or two ago was memorable.

I drank through quite a few 1989s and 1990s over the years, and while the 1989 is more classical the 1990 has that exoticism and thrill, which gives in an edge. However the 1982 I think is on the same level, and the 1985 can be spectacular too.

No question the 89 & 90 were amazing. The 80s provided some special vintages for Conseillante. 83 was also superb about a decade ago since the last time tasted. The aromatics of this chateau back then were good enough for me to sit back and contemplate life. No need to drink this one too fast. A little too modern directioning at the moment I'm afraid and pricing is getting beyond reach for the recent releases. Last purchases 2004 and 1999 and that will be it for me.
