TN: 1995 Pontet Canet

Post by JCNorthway »

I decided to open a bottle of the 1995 Pontet Canet Sunday evening because I had a real hankering for a nice Bordeaux - even though it was being paired with a lowly beef burger. This bottle had been in my temp controlled cellar from purchase until about 2 years ago. Since then, it has been stored around 68-70 degrees. I opened the bottle a couple of hours ahead, but did not decant it. I also popped it in the frig for about 25 minutes to drop the temp a few degrees. I was a bit surprised by how youthful this wine still seems at age 24, especially with its warmer storage recently. It was a deep purple with no bricking at the edges. It still has tremendous fruit that seems well balanced with still noticeable tannins. And it has enough acidity to retain a real freshness in the glass. For those who crave those tertiary characteristics, you may need to wait a few more years. If you like fruit in your wine, I think you will find this in a very nice place right now.

Jon, I think you need a sign on your cellar door:

Very interesting note, JC.
1995 remains an enigma, like this vintage that you just want to step back from and assess... cautiously.

I have had a mixed reaction to the 1995s that I have drunk. But this one leans heavily toward the positive side. I'm wondering if this is a vintage where the results were uneven.

I know the 1995 Petrus can hold ''blanquito it X 3''. But is it the same for you Jim?

JCNorthway, I've enjoyed my few 1995 I had when they were older. Howing the 1995 Bordeaux wasn't a good thing. I'm sure this 1995 Pontet Canet is now starting to be ready, and for long.

Nic

P.S. Say Hi to Paula.
