2016 Giscours: Absolutely stunning.
Picked up 12 bottles in NH yesterday and uncorked one here in Foxboro last night before the Patriots-Giants game.
Wow, this wine was just spectacular.
Absolutely beautifully balanced.
I’m rushing out the door, heading to NYC for the weekend for some fun, including a BWE get together.
I’ll report more on the Giscours but I just wanted to get out there that this is an amazing wine!

Is this the vintage they got in trouble over for adding sugar?

I checked and here’s the scoop (of sugar):

Sounds like what we lawyers refer to as a “de minimus” violation.
I’ll blanquito this wine 2 or 3 times into my seventies of course but, man, is this beauty drinking swimmingly now!

Yes, reading that, it sounds like much ado about nothing. I thought I heard they might have to declassify some of it?
Re: 2016 Giscours: Absolutely stunning.
How does this compare to the 15'? I hate it when you do this, lol. I have over a case of the 15' and was planning on skipping the 16' but now I wonder. The NH price nets to $65/btl on the sale which looks pretty good right now.

I'll believe you Jim.
We will enjoy these 2016 for a long time.
Comparing that 2016 to the 2009 Giscours, what would you say?

Re: 2016 Giscours: Absolutely stunning.
As great as 2009 and all of the recent vintages of Giscours have been, Nicola, the 2016 blew them all away.
i'm truly getting why Giscours has been an "epiphany" wine for many over the years.
Mark Golodetz said it recently about the 1979 Giscours, but I've seen others talk about the greatness of this estate in personal ways.
This estate has a great terroir, which has been presented over the years in many vintages... perhaps never better than in 2016.
Incredible Margaux balance, for my taste.

Gerry: What? You are skipping the 2016 Giscours? How does this compare to the 15'? I hate it when you do this, lol. I have over a case of the 15' and was planning on skipping the 16' but now I wonder. The NH price nets to $65/btl on the sale which looks pretty good right now.
Buy, my man! Buy like the wind!
2015 is a Margaux vintage.
But 2016 is a Bordeaux vintage.
As stunning as the '15 Giscours is, the '16 Giscours is even more stunning.
Get a case before the 15% off sale is over, you'll be gladc you did.
I just can't believe the balance in this wine.

I was able to get the 2015 Giscours for under $55 all in, but the best I can find for 2016 where I can get it is about $75. If I could get it for $65, I would be there.

I paid $65 on sale in NH, Jon.
That’s right, at $75 I didn’t bite but at $65 I bought a dozen.
Along with Calon Segur, this has become one of my favorite estates, along with long time favorites Sociando and Leoville Barton. I’m glad I was able to stock up on these wines from 14/15/16 in my last years of major purchases for the cellar.

LOL, I’m having the same reaction here. I've been buying Giscours on and off for a couple of decades and have the 2015 among other vintages in the cellar, but I passed on the 2016. I had to stop somewhere. Now I’m experiencing FOMO.Gerry M. wrote:How does this compare to the 15'? I hate it when you do this, lol. I popped a bottle of the 2015 last month ITNOS. Excellent stuff but way young. Should be outstanding after 2-3 Blanquitos.

I tasted both, and for me 15 outshined 16...And I would say 16 is darn good....I bought 15 Giscours, and thought of buying 16 too, but I concentrated my 16 purchases on Northern Medoc...
Re: 2016 Giscours: Absolutely stunning.
I shifted from predominantly Margaux in 2015 to N. Medoc in 2016. Plus a few right bankers.
Re: 2016 Giscours: Absolutely stunning.
Giscours was one of my favorites from 1970 into the early 1980s, when the wines declined considerably. I've bought some recently after reading here about the come back of Giscours. Friday night I drank the 2012. It is fairly well balanced and good enough, but the nose is shy. Maybe after blanquitoing it once or twice the Margauxberries will come out and I will like it more.

Me too....but in de minimus quantities.DavidG wrote:I shifted from predominantly Margaux in 2015 to N. Medoc in 2016. Plus a few right bankers.
One of my goals for the next year is to stop using offsite storage and return all the wayward wine to my house.
