Friday 6:15 at Montmartre -- discussion thread

Post by marcs »

Ian's dinner is set up for Friday October 18th at Montmartre at 6:15! Repeat, our time is now locked in for 6:15! Be there or be square.

We have eight people coming, and a great wine lineup including Gruaud Larose 1976-1990-1996-2000, 1995 l'Evangile, Clinet, and Canon La Gaffeliere, 2000 Canon La Gaffeliere, champagne, and probably more wine I don't know about.

Looking forward!

Marc

I could bring over quite a few things:

Leoville Barton 1995, 1999
Gruaud 1996
Magdelaine 1995
Rauzan Segla 1995
Palmer 1995
Ducru 1995
Calon Segur 1995, 1996
L’Evangile 1995
Clos Fourtet 2000

I hesitate to bring over older wines

You two bring all of those and we'll be set! ;)

I'm up for Bordeaux and can probably bring something that will tie in with almost any of the above.

I can also bring Champagne or a dessert wine if desired.

I vote for 1995 l’Evangile or Magdelaine from Ian and would be quite happy with 2009 or 2010 Conseillante or one red Burgundies from Marc.

I plan to bring a nice Champagne and appropriate red Bordeaux.

Another vote for the 95 Evangile here!

If Ian also brings the 96 Gruaud I would be happy to add the 90 and 2000 Gruaud to make a nice little vertical of classic vintages

I like Chris’ idea of mixing it up and adding some Burgundy too so I will bring at least one good bottle of Burgundy as well...if people are meh on the idea of the Gruaud vertical and just want me to bring Burgundy I can do that too, just say so

More than happy to bring the 1995 L’Evangile and the 1996 Gruaud Marcus.

How about a 1995 Clinet to try alongside the L'Evangile?
And a 1988 Climens?

This is shaping up to look like a fine BWE offline and while initially I held back from casting my vote considering that I would not be attending, I think that I would have definitely cast my votes for the 1995 / 1996 Calon Segur duo that Ian offered up as they are both entering truly enjoyable drinking windows. And I am fully looking forwards to notes and pictures.

A local wine friend, Eric Tomasi, will be joining with his wife. So we are now up to eight (Eric, Ian, Chris, Dave, me, plus three spouses). Eric will bring the 1976 Gruaud for a four-bottle Gruaud vertical and still trying to figure out which other wines.

I am going to add a 1995 and 2000 Canon La Gaffeliere to the mix. So we will have a little 1995 Right Bank horizontal (Evangile, Clinet, and CLG), a mini-vertical of Canon La Gaffeliere, and a four vintage vertical of Gruaud. Looking forward!

Eric will bring Champagne in addition to the Gruaud.

Marcus

Unfortunately there is no chance of me making it by 530pm.

My last meeting at the Ronald Reagan building of the International Trade Center finishes at 6pm.

How far is Monmartre from there?

It’s about 3 miles from the Reagan Building. Fastest way probably subway from Federal Triangle to Eastern Market on the Blue/Orange line - about a 10 minute ride. Don’t worry too much about being a little late.

It will probably take you about 30 minutes total. As Chris says the Federal Triangle metro station will let you get the blue or orange line to Eastern Market — it is a short ride but you will have to walk to and from the stations, wait for the train, etc. Alternatively you can get an Uber or a cab and that might let you do it in 20 minutes.

I don’t think we can start at 5:30 any more if Ian is going to arrive at 6:15 or 6:30 — that is more than a little late, and he is the reason we are setting this up. Chris and others, would you be OK if we started at 6:30? We could also do 6:00 but 6:30 would let Ian be relaxed about arriving on time.

Thanks, respond on the thread

Ian, we are set at 6:15, you should be able to arrive just as we are all sitting down and getting settled in! Let me know if you need any help with directions or anything. Montmartre Restaurant is at 327 7th St SE, Washington, DC 20003 near the Eastern Market metro.

6:15 sounds good.

Thinking maybe 1982 Gruaud Larose to go into that vertical. Plus of course some Champagne.

Extremely kind of you Chris to throw the 1982 into the mix!

I was supposed to be having dinner with a guy from the Heritage Foundation tonight who was going to give me the inside lowdown and inside scoop on Trump - he worked in the Trump White House. But he bailed on me so I am am going to spend my evening collating my conference notes with this wine for company, which has been sitting in my Manhattan Wine Company storage for eight years.

I must say it is as lean as that Kenyan who just went under 2h for the marathon...in a good way...but not a patch on the Coche Bourgogne Blanc...which makes it one of the most overpriced wines in the world, at today’s prices, even more so than Carruades Lafite.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. Just spend a few pounds and get a taxi.
Leave your thing ten minutes early, get a taxi, the traffic will be rugged that time of night, but you'll get there by 615-20.

Have fun! Sounds like a great time!

And the 1982 Gruaud Larose.... Baby doll!

Looking forward the passionated reports.

On my side, probably a better quality/price ratio than the 2006 red Coche, a 2017 Heritage du Cousy Beaujolais Village: very Gamay, with medium red berries, light spices, correct concentration, vine wood and leave vegetal and that little "je-ne-sais-quoi" of kirsch fruit surrounded by granitic stony mineral. Stay light and convenient.

Have a good one tomorrow.

Re a taxi, it is a pretty straight shot to Eastern Market, don't think it takes you more than 15-20 minutes in the car.

If you need a street taxi (harder to get these days) there is usually one available right in front of the Trump Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue :-)

P.S. what conference are you attending?

You should be grateful he bailed. Even with whipped cream and a cherry on top, a Trump scoop would still be a $hit sundae.
