Nice tasting: 76 red Burg, 78 Spanish, 80 Bordeaux & others

Beau hosted a nice night on Monday. We had some old wines, most of which showed really well. Tons of fun.

Ruinart Rose Champagne Brut NV
Wow, this is great. Of late, I’ve thought rose bubbly wasn’t in my sweet spot, but this bottle made me rethink that. Seamless, balanced, drinks effortlessly. A terrific rose (AKA like the best of white and red wines, magically combined). 93+ pts.

2010 Billaud-Simon Montée de Tonnerre Chablis.
Phew. I’ve sat on a bunch of 2010 Billaud Chablis, popping 1-2 a year, with zero premox. Then, last week, a poxed ‘10 Mont de Milieu. Uh-oh. So I grabbed this to see if the rest are still good, and this bottle said yes. Lovely, semi mature Chablis, with oyster shell, minerals, and nice depth and length. Drained quickly by the table. Still, I’ll drink the rest soon. 91-92 pts

2007 J.M. Boillot Puligny Montrachet
Really tasty. Rich, mature yet fresh nose of hazelnuts and lemons married to a crisp, penetrating, integrated, and lingering palate. Lacks some refinement. My third bottle in the last few years, each showing zero sign of oxidation. 92+ pts

1976 Remoissenet Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes
Sensationally fresh and vigorous. Classic old school burgundy profile, but still really good despite that. Super intense from the high acids, balanced by plenty of lovely cherry fruit. Blind, I would guessed something from the early ‘90s. Bottle and label look like a recent release, perhaps within the last decade. 93 pts.

1980 Pichon Lalande
Fill well into the neck.... Sensational as always. I probably wouldn’t have had this before (this was my 3rd or 4th bottle in the last 5 years), except many in my local wine group were born in ‘80. This bottle really shines. Wonderfully rich and deep for an ‘off’ vintage, with an irresistible tobacco and cedar bouquet. Dry but not austere, poblano-pepper green but not unripe, mature but not decrepit. Seems positively dark and deep next to the high-toned Remoissenet. Unapologetically old school and all the better for it. 94 pts.

1978 Miguel Torres Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Coronas Reserva
Not a correct bottle, with undrinkably high levels of VA.

1983 Madeira (I didn’t note producer)
Really unattractive visuals, like grey, day-old coffee dregs. Very strange to taste as well, uber medicinal and kinky. Then someone says it smells like angostura bitters and my mind shifts, seeing this more as a cocktail, maybe an old fashioned. That helps, a little.

It’s just because I have too much Riesling! No time for Chablis.

DOB 1980....man were getting old. Just beyond my kids age!

Like others have given up rolling the dice on white Burgs for the long haul but the 07 Boillot I bought for a dinner party probably 5 years ago and very good at the time. Always drink chablis young and I must say have never experienced a wow factor with aging. I like them crisp, acidic and minerals in their youth but not sure if I've ever experienced the magic of aging if there is any???

I'm younger than ever, like that 76 Pinot.

Nice tasting Patrick. I'll come back with Tn of some good stuff of the last weeks. Being crazily busy with work, kids, home improvement (99% done).

Geez i feel away, far away from BWE for the last months.

Have had two of those old Torres. Both were undrinkably flawed

Ahhh. Jay Miller poured us some fabulous ones from the 60's and 70's maybe 10-15 years ago and I've never forgotten them. I never see them - even current releases - locally.

We've got a bottle of 10yr old Miguel Torres brandy in our coffee bar area, for weekend mornings when one needs a kicker.
