Thanksgiving wines

Post by DavidG »

So what are you all drinking. Finally decided on:
2016 Bouchard Meursault Perrières
1994 Ravenswood Cooke Zin
1994 Ravenswood Old Hill Zin

The Ravenswoods are a recent library release from Joel Peterson. TNs to follow. Miss Stefan's traditional multi-day report...

Thank you David... we are on west coast and as per yearly tradition, heading out to join my wife’s sisters’ families in prepping the food and have thanksgiving feast...

Usually, open Americano wines like Pinot or Zin for the TG, but since it’s also anniv, wanted to open 03. But I don’t have any 03 Americano wines...

Indeed. Bill, hope you’re enjoying a nice break.

David, I’m extra keen to hear about the Bouchard.

Still trying to figure this out. Thinking of going with a Blanc des Blancs and a Rose Champagne plus St Innocent Pinot Noir, German Riesling and red Bordeaux.

Don’t think I have had the one David is drinking but I have thoroughly enjoyed recent vintages (2012 on) of Bouchard Meursault Perrieres and Genevrieres. Great white Burgundy at $100 or less.

Bit of a mixed bag chilling right now....

NV Pierre Gimmonet + NV Roederer Estate
18 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rose
09 Fort Ross 'Fort Ross Vyd' PN [Sonoma Coast]
15 Au Bon Climat PN - I can't remember which bottling

There's some supermarket whites lurking about too

I like US PN for this holiday but I guess US Zin could work too.

Happy Thanksgiving all, hope you are having a wonderful holiday. Here’s what we drank:
  • 2016 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (11/28/2019)
Light yellow/gold. Lemon and stoney, minerally, mouth-watering umami with a bit of oak on the nose. Medium body, nice tension between the zesty fruit and acidity, flavors follow the nose. Medium finish. An excellent young Meursault but too young for any complexity. Finished with a Diam cork so maybe it will get there with little risk of premox, but I’m no longer gambling on aged white Burgs.
  • 1994 Ravenswood Zinfandel Cooke - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (11/28/2019)
Library release from Joel Peterson/Once and Future. Perfect cork and fill. Arrived yesterday so there may still be some sediment in suspension. Medium dark red core, lightening and bricking at rim. Aged sweet nose with hay, spice, nuts, some oxidative notes. Medium body, fruit faded but not gone, leaving a tangy acid-leaning balance, some spice follows the nose, some residual tannins, medium finish. On its last legs but not dead, drink up, good to very good if you like old wine.
I didn’t open the Ravenswood Old Hill, partly to give it a little time to settle the sediment and partly because 2 bottles was enough for just the 3 of us.

Now to let dinner settle enough to make room for the pumpkin pie.

I had the most epic wine Thanksgiving I have ever had. A sampling of the wines we had last night and today—

2009 Foillard Cote de Py
2001 Pegau Reservee
2002 Hudelot Noellat Vougeot
2000 Grand Mayne
2001 Pichon Baron
2001 La Conseillante
2005 Suduiraut
2001 Togni
1993 Batard Montrachet
2014 Geantet Pansiot G-C Poissenot
2002 Jadot Clos St Jacques
2000 Gruaud Larose

I’ll do a separate thread with impressions when I get a chance...surpsrised I am still standing

"surpsrised I am still standing". I'm proud of you, BWEer marcs!

Nothing tonight here, but happy Thanksgiving to all my friends in the USA.

Buy the way, I'm just out of a conference from a Québec actor, about his past addiction and how he got out of it! Interesting, but I'll have Champagne anyway tomorrow at my house with my colleagues, before the business Christmas dinner party.

Just me and Lisa this year, so a 2008 Littorai Summa Pinot Noir. Closest thing you'll find to Chambolle Musigny in these parts. Too bad Littorai only got to work with Summa for a few vintages.

Well, I didn’t get to open all the bottles I brought. Get together with friends at a neighbor’s house. There was already a pretty good 2016 Italian Barbera and an adequate Ste Michelle Dry Riesling open when I arrived. Of the wines I brought, great showing by the NV Vilmart Rubis (very pale pink), excellent 2015 St Innocent Zenith Pinot Noir and a fairly grouchy 1982 La Lagune.

I brought usual suspects like 2006 Duhart Milon en magnum, 1978 Lynch Bages, 2003 Sociando Mallet, and 2006 d’Angerville Volnay Chapmans.
The Burgundy was nice, the three Bordeaux were a bit grouchy as well.

Glad I did not open any Bordeaux. Maybe it was "root" day instead of a "fruit" day :)

1994 Ridge Monte Bello
Just a super elegant, fruit driven well balanced and easy to drink Bordeaux knock off ever. These guys do it just about as good as anyone in California. There is layers and layers of chocolate, extremely dense fruit, mostly ripe blackberry and its extremely self contained. Quintessential of this bottling with notes of pencil shavings and St. Estephe characteristics . This could age another 20 years. 97 points.

I still think about the d’Angerville Volnay you brought to a small offline in NYC with Ian, Chris-Chasse, Ramon, and perhaps another. I think it was a 2005 d’Angerville, it seemed like an epic in the making.

D'Angerville does rock!!!!

Drank a bottle with Tim in Paris several years ago and it was an eye opener. Don't seem to find them in stock but need to secure a few soon.

Welcome to the board amusermix and those are a couple of really nice Cabernet options from each side of the pond, so what vintages were they and how’d they show?

Not the Champans or the Fremiets. Definitely the Clos des Ducs
