1998 Chateau Musar

Post by Bordhead2000 »

Dang. 5 hours of air and this was heaven. Started super acidic, volatile. 5 hours on it was leather and tobacco choking raspberry and cherry.

Chateau Musar used to my go to restaurant wine when I would see it on the list. The wine has always struck above its price point but now we rarely see it anymore locally and the price has risen selling for $55 at the SAQ when wine lists 10-15 years back sold it for $30-40 and now $125+. There are now other wines that are more competitive at this price point. I haven't had it for a good 5 yrs but when in Quebec w have tried t explore Lebonese wines which are more available than Ontario. Nothing however has risen to the level of Musar. Glad you enjoyed a Lebonese icon.

Haven’t had any Musar older than the 95, but I’ve enjoyed quite a few bottles from 1997-2004. Count me a big fan. I also like the 98 in particular and think it’s underrated by the Musarheads.

@Blanquito - I wasn’t sure if I liked it at first. It was so acidic and a bit harsh. At the two hour mark it became enjoyable. It was at the five hour mark that it really impressed me. I forgot to mention the black tea notes mixed with the leather and cigar. I can’t remember another wine quite like it. I have 3 more and may pick up a few more.

Have any of you had the 2002 Musar? JJ Buckley has some for sale right now.

We went to some Lebanese/Levant restaurant in Paris that had tons of back vintages of Musar. I'd never seen so many on a wine list. Unfortunately, there were commas in all the prices, so I sheepishly handed the list back to the somm, and ordered a glass of the house red.

We had the 97 a little while ago and it was excellent. I'm amazed at how this estate can capture intensity of flavor with lightness, and a light color.

Jal introduced me to this estate maybe 20 years ago!
