Social cohort dinner

Post by jal »

To celebrate Jill's birthday, we met with our social cohort*, our friends Kenny and Suzanne, and opened some really good stuff:

With stone crabs and mustard sauce:
Dom Perignon P2 2000; so good, rich, full yet light, probably one of the best Champagnes I have ever drank. I like it even more than the 2002 we had in Fort Lauderdale last month, it is a bit lighter but that makes it even more balanced. 97

2014 Servin Les Clos 2014; clean, bright, great acidity and good structure. A bargain for a Grand Cru Chablis. I love this producer. 94

With some huge aged Flannery strip steaks:
1979 Pichon Lalande; Intoxicating perfume, the nose alone is amazing, my favorite estate in the years 1978,79,81,82,83, on the palate, it is a charming graceful wine with elegance and enough backbone to stand up to the big hunk of meat. Long finish. 95

In these trying times, we hope to continue drinking and eating well especially when we can celebrate birthdays and other milestones.

*Dr. Daniel Griffin says the concept of a social cohort related to coronavirus is gaining steam in the medical community. “With a potential 18-month period ahead of us, this is a less draconian and hopefully feasible form of social distancing and social isolation in groups that are about the size of a large extended family that prevent spread between these isolated groups."

Some great wines Jacques and Happy Birthday to Jill. We were out to dinner last Sat just before they shut down with good friends and it felt like the Last Supper! This cocooning is going get tired fast.

Are the beaches now clear in front of your place?

Danny, Sarasota County closed the beaches Friday to get rid of most of the spring breakers. It seemed to have worked. The public beach is not empty but has much fewer people on it, the parking lot is barricaded, St. Armands Circle is deserted. Restaurants can only provide take-out food, bars and pubs are closed.

We sat on the beach for a few hours today, it was quiet but there were some people walking. Thank goodness the crazy crowds from the last two weeks are now gone.

Nice report and yes 1979 Pichon Lalande is a special wine.

Big kiss and hug to Jill for turning 46.

Stay safe in these crazy times.

Got a preview of the 2000 P2 in the fridge on Suzanne’s IG and am certainly glad you celebrated your wife’s birthday in style; Happy Birthday Jill!

Jacques

Please send our hugs and kisses to Jill. Wishing her many, many more. Julie's birthday is this Saturday, but we are going to be doing mostly same close family gathering.

I've noticed you have been drinking a lot more champagne that you used to. It must be one of the pleasures of retirement. Can't wait for it.

Happy B-Day to Jill.

I too had a very slight preference for the 2000 P2 over the 2002 P2 for the reasons you mention, Jacques.

Ft. Lauderdale just went into deep freeze. Only essential businesses can stay open. They include liquor stores, wine shops, distilleries and (medical) marajuana shops. Beaches are closed indefinitely. When things finally loosen up, bars will probably be allowed first. Welcome to Fort Liquor-dale.

Lol...
Gotta keep those essential businesses open for the health and welfare of our citizenry!

Happy Birthday, Jill!

We BWE'ers have long known that wine shops are essential services.

Thanks guys, we kept it low key. Jill feels that if she doesn't celebrate, then it doesn't count and she'll stay in a lower risk group, lol.
