I have always liked the 1981 Beaucastel, especially the last few years it is drinking very well. The magnum I had last night - decanted for 4 h - showed by far superior. The solid lush and also fresh fruit core amazed me.
Powerful but in a way also modest with a great building intensively well flavored mid palate. Earthy notes with truffle and subtle garrigue with creamy spicy licorice. Great structure with balanced acidity and tannin. Long complex finish. Enough potential to age for another 1-3 decades..........
Magnums of old CdP's are difficult to find but IMHO more than worth to seek for...
