A Look Back; Retired Bordeaux Wine Labels

Post by jckba »

So last night a good friend that turned 50 earlier in the month opened up the below and it got me thinking about how many wines have undergone significant label changes over the years and figured that it would also make for a good running list of a thread. No real rules and just post a picture of whatever it is you come across.

Cool label ...but not a fan of the awkward shadow though

Was in the mood for a mature claret last night and had this bottle of birth year Domaine de Chevalier standing up in the cellar for a while and decided what the heck and this was fully resolved and drinking beautifully. And while I much prefer this old photograph styled label one as opposed to the current drawing of the same thing, let’s not lose track of what really matters and that’s what’s in the bottle!

Not just the label, but the shape of the bottle on that Talbot!

Love those old Talbot bottles!
Who remembers the old Eschenauer Bordeaux bottles - like Rausan Segla (and maybe Smith Haut Lafitte?)?

Hah. I remember those wacky shapes. Had a 1970 SHL rouge a long time ago with that triangular feel. The wine was terrible, and the bottle didn't fit in any rack.

The Rhone has quite a few estates with really strange bottle shapes.

Yup, only encountered a few of those. They added a bit of character but not to the wine inside.

Lafon Rochet has gone to a canary yellow over the last few decades, to match the estate's paint job. The old labels were rather understated, although not at the Haut Bailly level.

While Ian posted the Talbot Cordier label / bottle upthread, I thought this pristine Gruaud also deserved its own post and they just don’t make them like they used to.

I’ve generally liked the 66s I have tried.
