Corked 00 Leo B, Flat 00 Sociando, Good 02 Jadot Clos Vouge

Post by JimHow »

A quiet and somber Christmas Eve this year, my last bottle of 2000 Leoville Barton was corked, my last bottle of 2000 Sociando Mallet didn't seem corked but was pretty flat, thin, and unexciting. The 2002 Jadot Clos Vougeot opened nicely, red fruited, spicy, nicely structured. It was shy at first but opened nicely with dinner, 92 points.

I remember drinking the 2002 Clos Vougeot with Pappa Doc many years ago, he liked it and bought some bottles. I have one bottle left if the 2002, as well as some 2005s and 2012s.

Jim,

Would you say the 2000 Sociando needs a blanquito or two, or do you think it’s what it is? I want to open one soon...

That was the last bottle of my case, CV, I would say seven of them were great, compelling, interesting, and four or five were disappointments. I think it is what it is at this point.

I feel like that was my hit rate too. Lots of bell/green peppers on some, others very good.

At age 20, lots of variability

Opened a bottle of 1982 Sociando Mallet about a month ago, it was a bit on the green side but very nice. It smoothed out a bit over the evening. We didn’t finish the whole bottle and it was even better the next night. Certainly a wine built to last. Same thing happened at a 1982 horizontal in January - good but fairly green but Panos said it was really nice the next day.

I had a similar wine last night - 2002 Drouhin Clos Veugeot. Very similar to your note, wonderful wine with great balance and persistence, but not quite the depth or complexity I'd like to see in a mature Grand Cru Burgundy. Perfect haute cuisine wine, which would let the food speak but still be of the right level for the food. I needed something bigger for my roast goose.
