A couple of 2014 Right Bank beauties
A couple of 2014 Right Bank beauties
A socially distant Xmas Eve a mile and a half away at my parents. My mom had decided on a menu featuring leeks two ways; cold as a first course in a vinaigrette à la provençale and then again gratiné as a side with the filet mignon and parmesan, garlic and thyme potato stacks. I was debating which way to go wine wise but ended up settling on the below;
2014 Chateau Canon (72% Merlot 28% Cab Franc); a shy yet elegant nose of black raspberry, black tea, cedar and mineral notes that led to a beautifully proportioned, pure black cherry fruited turns mineral expression with wonderful length that lingers ever so gracefully on the long finish. It really warrants another Blanquito (or 2) but this swan song effort from John Kolasa has all the makings of a very memorable Canon. 94+
2014 Chateau Larcis Ducasse (85% Merlot 15% Cab Franc); a wide open for business nose of blackberry, strawberry, bell pepper and tobacco notes that lead to a lively, dark fruited and tobacco flavored expression that was pleasurable but paled in comparison to the Canon on this day. And so it goes. 92
Having not had either of these wines since initially tasting them at the UGC almost 4 years ago, I was eager to check in so here goes ...2014 Chateau Canon (72% Merlot 28% Cab Franc); a shy yet elegant nose of black raspberry, black tea, cedar and mineral notes that led to a beautifully proportioned, pure black cherry fruited turns mineral expression with wonderful length that lingers ever so gracefully on the long finish. I have been toying with buying some Canon 2014, this could push me over the edge.
No chance of me buying any vintage of Larcis Ducasse
Nice line up and pictures JC - nice bottle of port to finish on, how was it?

Canon 2014 is great, and will perhaps be the last bright light before the chateau went dark under the current administration. I just tasted the 2015, which got the triple digit score, and it ain’t the Canon I knew.

The 14 Canon sounds great. Anyone had the 08 Canon? I snagged a case for $56 per bottle all-in back in 2015 — the price was too good to pass over — but I’ve not tried one yet figuring they’ll be too young for a while still.

older vintages of Larcis Ducasse are 'proper'. We had a solid one a couple of years ago.Comte Flaneur wrote:

So for (1) I would buy without reservation and for (2) the backstory on that bottle is that my Zachys private client rep Dean who is also in Mark’s group brought this to a dinner of mine last month at La Panetiere and there was about 1/4 of the bottle left over at the end of the dinner and he generously let me take it home. While I preserved the leftovers, the month of time really allowed this to broaden out and the nose on this 1970 Fonseca Port was stupendous with dark red fruited jam, fig and saddle leather scents for days that led to a fully resolved, insanely beautiful palate that was a joy to behold. 97Comte Flaneur wrote:I have been toying with buying some Canon 2014, this could push me over the edge.

Thanx for the Canon note...I picked up 2 earlier this yr for a song, but I wasn't brave enough to consider popping one one.
