2005 Pontet-Canet uncorked

Post by jckba »

So I loaded up on this wine in this vintage and every time I go down to the cellar, I stare at the cases but this morning, I decided today would be different and brought a bottle up to pair with a leftover sliver of Xmas prime rib.

2005 Château Pontet-Canet (75% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot); decanted for 7 hours and this was dark and brooding with blackberry, minerals, tobacco leaf, pencil lead and vanilla scents that lead to a concentrated, full bodied, sweet, silky, blackberry and cassis driven palate that just really needs more time. 95+

Thanks JC. I’ve got a few of these in the cellar. Based on your note I should probably leave them there a while.

Yeah, still a little too primary fruit driven at this stage but the quality is obvious.

Alfred T served this for lunch when we visited him, in May 2015, along with the 2000, 2003 and 2009. For me the 2005 was the pick of those four.
