Yes, Burgundy prices are really escalating.

Post by Claudius2 »

Folks
Got the following price list from Neal Martin (BurgReport) which made me stop and check - can that make sense??

Domaine Clos des Lambrays:
Clos des Lambrays 2019 75cl 445.00 (2018: 258.00, 2017: 238.00, 2016: 225.00) * (Swiss Francs, excludes tax)
Clos des Lambrays 2019 150cl 910.00 (536.00, 481.00, —)

The prices are Swiss Francs which are then subject to tax. One CHF = USD1.12. So the 2019 750mL would be around USD500 plus tax.

My point is that prices are around double compared to the very good 2016 vintage, and there have been steady increases every year irrespective of the quality of the vintage. None of that is due to the currency as the CHF is very strong at present.

Okay, okay, not all producers are pushing up prices at that rate, but there have been big price increases pretty well everywhere in Burgundy since 2014. NM showed data recently that said that there was an average doubling of prices since then.

Now as I have said many times, the prices of Bordeaux - with the exception of the most famous and treasured wines - are starting to look very good value.
cheers

LVMH... they have been waiting for years to bring up the price to the level of their other "vins d'elites" (Cheval Blanc, Yquem,...).
Now, very close ... so they will put marketing effort to sell the stuff... I paid 50€ for the 2005...
At 445 $ a bottle... not worth it... can't become super within a year... but production was low...so temptation was taken...

Still, prices increase also elsewhere in Burgundy (from 68 in 2016 to 96€ in 2019 a bottle for a Morey Grand cru which, I think, will be at least as good as clos des Lambrays...)

Indeed a reason why I bought Bordeaux 2019... I was tempted by Gaffeliere 20200...but I have failed to find the alcohol content... so will probably pass.
