Giscours 70

Post by Michael-P »

70 Giscours - On another BWE post about Napa wine tastings I had noted that we had a guest visiting a few weeks ago. On that trip we went to some nice dinners with him and when he mentioned one of his favorites was Giscours, I went to the cellar to see what I might have. I could only find one 375 of 1970, so I brought that to a dinner. It had a fill into the neck and good color. Cork came out solid. We all agreed it was the best wine of the weekend (vs $400 Napa cabs). Beautiful complexity, length, flavors (classic Margaux). 96

I think he likes the ‘79 as well.

Giscours did well in the 70s, no?
The modern Giscours, like Calon Segur, has become one of my favorite estates.

Up until 1982, Giscours was the third best Margaux, and sometimes bested Margaux and Palmer. The 1970 was lovely, but it has been a long time since I drank one.

Great to hear the 1970 showed so well. Back in the day, I drank through many bottles of 1970 Giscours - they were all wonderful. Probably 10 years since I’ve had one of those. Both the 1979 and 1983 Giscours were very good as well. But I think Giscours was usurped by Rausan Segla as the number 3 wine in Margaux sometime in the early/mid 1980s.

If 1970 is modern vintage, I think you are a twin of Francois…..
On the other hand he would say you need to wait another 200 years ;)

Yes the 1979 was my Eureka wine but the 1970 was probably the best Giscours I ever tasted until I had the 2010. It is a wine I have followed, and done a couple of verticals.

I think I have mentioned that Giscours went through a down period post 1982, when the owners focused on polo ponies at her than the estate.

Since then Giscours has gone through a checkered history, with a long running court case and a serious back injury to the new owner which left him a paraplegic.

I think the wines now are as good as they have ever been. Consistency is back, and I would suggest trying to find the 2010, which seems to be particularly strong in Margaux.

I had a 75' not too long ago that was very good but tye tannins were starting to take over. I still have a bottle left that will probably opened within the next year.

I bought a fair amount of 15' and a half bottle I tried showed a lot of promise.

Agree...

Giscours has been putting out some great wines lately, especially under the helm of Van Beek. I think it is still under the radar of the many.

I have bought enprimeur 09, 10 and 15. For my taste, I liked 10 better than 09. For me, 09 Rauzan-Segla is better than 09 Giscours as I thought 09 RS to be more expressive than its Giscours counterpart. But I think 10 Giscours is a better one than 10 RS. 2010 version is a huge monumental wine from Giscours, IMO. So much so that apart from regular bottles, I have a magnum comfortably resting in the cellar.

And I liked 15 better than 16. I think 15 and 16 are pretty much hovering at the same price, and for that reason, if I were looking, I would seek out 15. But you can't go wrong with either one. And not to mention, 14 is a great value too...
