BWE DC '21, What are you bringing each night?

Post by JoelD »

I'm very much looking forward to these three days as a I'm sure all of you are as well.

I've seen random posts about what some people are planning to bring so I figured I would post a new thread so that it can all be in one place.

Still subject to change but below are some of the wines that I am considering bringing each night, and may adjust if anyone has any specific interest or to set up a horizontal or vertical of like wines.

Thursday Pomerol:
2000 La Conseillante
Maybe 1983 VCC or 1998 L'evangile
2010, 2011 or 2014 1er white burg

Friday options:
1983 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle
1999 Togni
2005 Red Burg
Maybe a 2001 Riesling Auslese or older

Saturday-Lots of options, input especially welcome here.
1989 Pichon Baron
1982/1989 La Dominique

Curious to see what others are planning, anyone planning to do some blind tasting can feel free to skip this obviously

2001 Pichon Baron and Lalande for Saturday, along with the 2001 Suduiraut and the 2011 Tertre Roteboeuf

Saturday-Lots of options, input especially welcome here.
1989 Pichon Baron
1989 Beychevelle
1990/1995 Haut Bailly
1982/1989 La Dominique
1989 Las Cases
1986/1988 Climens
What else are you bringing, Joel? Kidding...

Oooh, Nicola brought two bottles of 1990 Haut Bailly to the very first BWE convention in Chicago in February 2001, they were memorable.

Lol, Not bringing All of those Jim. Just 3 or so most likely. I was asking for input, since I have more options for last minute changes being in the area. I'll happily pick myself of course but always fun to bring what people like.

Maybe I should save the 1990 Haut Bailly for when Nicola makes it down next time then.

Well, if you’re looking for requests, I’m sure the 89 Purple Baron would please the room! I’m also a big fan of those two La Dominique. Instead of the 85 Canon, I could bring the 89 Pichon Lalande along with the 89 Canon to go with your Baron and Dominique, and we’d have the nice start on an 89 flight with some Left and Right.

Very well thought out, I agree with every part of this plan. i will pencil in the 89 Baron, 82 and 89 La Dominique for Saturday. I can trim off one of vintages of La Dominique if anyone else has other thoughts.

It would be quite fun to try both 89 Pichon's next to each other as I've had them both fairly recently.

My guests and I are bringing a 6L of a well regarded Bordeaux from 1996 for Saturday. Do we need champagne as well for Saturday? As for Friday, maybe Italian maybe a Rhone-also can bring champagne as well but I know we have the champagne reception at 4.

I was thinking of bringing some Rhys Pinot and Chardonnay on Friday, but now I'm thinking of bringing 2001 CdP like Pegau and/or Beaucastel. Any thoughts?

Saturday night I'm bringing 1983 Montrose, 1986 Gruaud Larose and 1986 Rauzan Segla.

We just returned from visiting our new granddaughter (and her parents) in British Columbia.

I'm digging through the cellar to find the bottles I have in mind. I'll use the info above to help make selections.

I am bringing myself. Because BWE "is not about the wine, it is about the people."
See you all soon! I was thinking about buying some Cali chardonnay in your honor today, Harry, at the NH chardonnay/pinot sale.
What was that wine Gerry/Patrick was talking about a few months ago, it's in stock in NH>
Gerry, do you have any chardonnay recommendations in NH this month?

I pulled the wines for this trip over a month ago and promptly put them in the check-in box, and I can't recall what they are! Other than the 3 that belong to BD (I am a mule at BD's command), a couple of aged Bordeaux and I think a JL Chave blanc (late 90s), I really have forgotten. So it will be a surprise for me too.

Stony Hill Chardonnay, maybe? At $50 or less, it is a great value for a terrific, age worthy white wine.

FYI that I'm bringing a 2001 Pegau on Friday -- could be fine to have two bottles though! Especially with the bottle variation you get with Pegau

Saturday, apropos of the 2000 vs 2001 thread/debate, we’ll bring a 2000 Haut Brion and La Miss. Anyone have the 2001 versions?

We’ll need Champagne for Saturday, probably 4-6 bottles. We can bring a couple of bottles.

Not sure about Friday. Maybe German Riesling or Napa Cab?

I can bring 2001 Vieux Telegraph along with Beaucastel if you are bringing Pegau (in my mind the best of those 3 in 2001).

On Thursday, we will be bringing a 2015 Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot (Bernard Moreau), 2010 Le Conseillante and 1986 Yquem.

On Friday we will bring 2015 Meursault Poruzot (Louis Latour), 1987 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon and a to be determined German Riesling Auslese.

On Saturday, we will bring a 1986 Talbot, 1989 Palmer and something else to be determined.

It's La Conseillante :-)

Very interested to try to 2015 Moreau as I also have some 2015 Moreau Ruchottes that I am waiting on to age more.

In light of our 2000 vs 2001 thread, I will also try to bring a 2000 Pichon Baron on Saturday to pair with the 2001 I'm bringing. I am also bringing a 2001 Lalande in case anyone wants to bring the 2000 (I don't have it).

I am thinking a 2001 Brunello and 2004 Barbaresco for Friday. For Saturday, I'm planning on 1995 GPL and 1996 Pontet Canet.

Did you mean the 1990 Conseillante, Chris? I think you said that in the other thread. I am debating bringing the 2000 to complete the every 10 years vertical.

It’s La Conseillante - Marcus pointed out my typo in the other thread. And yes, it would be great if you can bring the 2000 to make it an all star vertical.

I'll be happy to bring the 2000 La Conseillante then, I am very much looking forward to trying the 1990. It has been on my hit list since Nicola was raving about it.

Do we need another white burg for the evening? I have a nice 2014 Chateau De Meursault Charmes Du Dessus. Or I can bring some other Pomerol's I mentioned.

Those sound great, David. I wish I had a 2001 to compliment. The closest I can get is 2002 Haut Brion, happy to bring if it's wanted or save for BWE 2022 or 2032

The 2002 Pol Rogers are drinking really well across the lineup, showing some nice nutty/oxidized aged complexity. I’ll bring a 2002 Winston on Saturday for comparison.

Haven’t had the 09 but in my experience “younger” Togni in this age range are actually pretty fun to drink, they just lack aged complexity. They don’t shut down hard like Bordeaux, instead they are fruity, smooth, medium bodied and balanced, but a bit one dimensional

Sounds like it could use a Blanquito or two. I haven't had any younger Togni though, so can't speak from personal experience. Sitting on my 10/12/13 for a while I think.
