2019 Trotanoy or VCC?

Post by PghMike »

Looking at both to up my Pomerol inventory... Trotanoy still available for $269 and VCC at $299. Only looking at one or two bottles. Which would you guys go for?

I haven’t tasted either of them, but from what I’ve read you can’t go wrong here. I ended up with 2019 VCC, not Trot. I think it was because of price/availability at the time. VCC usually has a bigger dose of Cab Franc than Trot, so there’s that. Critics loved them both.

The true BWE answer is "Both!"

Alex matched the 2000s of these together back in August. They were about neck and neck.

This is like asking which of your kids you like best!!! On paper I like VCC more, being a cab franc junky, but damn Eve RT time I open a Trotanoy I am floored. I think VCC does better in off-years.

The most recent comparison I’ve done was the 2014, shortly after arrival. Trot seemed more lush and dark-fruited, VCC more acidic and red fruited, probably the Cab Franc influence. I haven’t tasted either recently.

I was refused to taste Moueix wines in November this year (2019 vintage), and they didn't want to send me bottles for tasting to Copenhagen. Apparently, Edouard Mouiex dislikes me, and I don't know for what? So I'm sorry, no TNs on Trotanoy 2019.

I tasted 2019 VCC, and it's an extremely fascinating wine with loads of black cherries, violets and black winter truffles. 98-99p from me.

Purchase both.

Honestly, OB, I wouldn't be able to articulate one sentence about the dude, I know nothing about him other than that I thin I saw his picture on the back of a La Tour Carnet. But I could be wrong.

I'm so thrilled to entertain you, Joel, my young boy, I'm honored by all of your accomplishments in accumulating the fine wines of these great United States. It is my honor, after 21 years on this site, to generate amusement from you. I aspire to your intellect and maturity in the world of wine commentary, you are a star, far eclipsing anything I have said here over the 30,000-plus or so posts on BWE. I anxiously await admission into your echelon, as a humble country lawyer from Maine. What is your wine of the year, I anxiously await your contribution as I mix it into my solemn calculus.

To move back to original question, the answer is both of course.

Seriously if funds are limited, why buy a wine that you will not be showing it’s best until 2045, at least judging by the 1998. For that money, you can probably find either 1998 or 2005 VCC. For Trotanoy, the 1998 is out of budget, but the excellent 2000 would work.

Thanks all. Not exactly a budget thing, just dipping toe into 2019 Pomerol since they can still be had at a relative value. I haven't really had this AOC so I didn't want to dive in yet. Also looking for some backfills of past vintages as well.

I'm saddened you excluded La Grave a Pomerol. And the family firm marketed/made Lafleur Gazin for a long time too, although I think now it has left the JP Mouiex stable.

There are many more Libournais properties that have various relations with the firm too, but its not always clear to me how the relationship between the estate ownership and marketing/distribution (for non owned firms) behaves.

======

Mouiex also used to own a clutch of Fronsacs/Canon Fronsac's 20-30 years ago, and some of them were pretty good for satellite AOC's. I remember enjoying quite a bit of the 95, 98 (i think) Canon Mouiex for example, on / near release. Those were all sold off and rolled up into an estate now called La Dauphine. But if one ever tripped over 90-98 of those minor properties take a flyer if they're cheap. I know Zachy's is a vexing retailer in many dimensions, but I've never seen any a shop with so many Mouiex wines.

Apart from the VCCs mentioned, you can often find L’Eglise Clinets being auctioned at Brentwood. The 2013, a seriously lousy vintage was actually really good here.

In general, if you are looking to explore a new appellation, you might want to find others interested and share wines and cost.

Yup. Grabbed 2012 and 2014 quite cheaply this year, like $125 or so.

I did the same on the 2012 and 2014, between brentwood unsold lots and benchmark sales. Also some of the 2016 for around 170.

Did L'Eglise go over to the dark side at all? I noticed they weren't listed on the classically styled Pomerols.

I thought 2014 l’Eglise Clinet was quite classic. Pretty high-toned for a Pomerol.

I've never had a l'Eglise Client that has been anything other than spectacular.
