So there are several Bordeaux that would be my contenders for leading my inventory in Bordeaux - Malescot St.-Exupery, Cos d’Estournel, Leoville Poyferre, La Lagune, Pichon Lalande and GPL, but it appears that none are even close to Chateau Montelena Estate Cab (the only wine we buy in every vintage).
We better drink faster; we’re getting old!

After an extensive cellar rationalization over the last couple of years (mostly achieved by selling off certain 'frauds' and fruit bombs), here are my current Bordeaux holdings (all chateau with at least 10 bottles):

Magdelaine - 73 bottles (up substantially from my prior tally, as I continue to backfill this defunct chateau whenever possible)
I'm doing this with La Tour Haut Brion

This was a good exercise as I had never done it.

1) Domaine de Chevalier
2) Grand Puy Lacoste
3) Sociando Mallet

I also looked at non-Bordeaux:

Italy = Produttori del Barbaresco
Spain = Lopez de Heredia
Red Burgundy = Domaine de Pavelot
California = Montelena
Germany = tie: Christoffel/JJ Prum
White Burgundy = Louis Michel Chablis

Fun to see what's in the cellar....

My top 5 Bordeaux holdings:
1) Lynch Bages
2) Cantemerle (this daily drinker moves up/down quickly depending on current stocks)
3) Haut Bailly
4) Conseillante
5) Montrose

Wow, DDC at the top, nice. I’m assuming rouge or does the count include the Blanc? I need more pre-03 DDC rouge (I like the Blanc from all eras).

Hey Blanquito, what were the 16 bottles of GPL you offloaded over the last two years? Sales or drinking? Specifically curious as to whether you have been drinking a lot of 1995 and 2005 GPL as I have a good number of those and wondering about your view of where those are on the maturation curve…

I sold off all of my 05 GPL, it’s not a bad wine at all, maybe 90-91 pts in my book, but I didn’t think they’d improve and I didn’t really want them especially given what they fetched at auction. Never lived up to its initial promise (FWIW, Parker felt the same way, substantially downgrading it in his 10 year retrospective on the 05 vintage).

I’ve kept all of my 95 GPL, which is young but excellent in a cool, classic style, probably 93-94 pts but hopefully with more improvement still to come.

If Prum is in Bordeaux, it takes my #1 slot.

One day I will learn to look at the title of the thread. Figeac now goes into fifth, but it’s a long way back from fourth.

Have you long been a Haut Bailly fan, DG? It seemed like an under the radar chateau until kinda recently, despite making consistently great wines since the 60’s or longer. The 79 is one of those largely unheralded gems.

Bruce Bassin turned me on to Haut Bailly shortly before he died in 1998. I bought a bottle here and there and it just kept growing on me. I’ve never had older ones.
