2004 Leoville Barton or 2005 La Lagune tonight?

Post by Jay Winton »

To be served with the Christmas tenderloin. What would be the choice, my esteemed brethren?

I would have preferred the Leoville Barton 2004 but perhaps it is still young?

Best, Dan

I hope you drink the La Lagune swill as I would like to know how it is developing. I bought some magnums of it early on (the only way to buy La Lagune as virtually all bottles purchased at auction are lousy) but have not drunk any.

You know, the only wine possibly worse than La Lagune in general, and more badly treated in the supply chain specifically, is Magdelaine.

It’s a close call which is worse in the end, either way both are best avoided altogether.

I agree, Patrick. Magdelaine is THE right bank wine to avoid at auctions.

Funny how some wines are much worse from auctions. My theory about La Lagune is that its lack of specific appellation induces people to buy store it poorly and forget about it.

I vote for the 2004 Leoville Barton, which, if I'm not mistaken, is an OB/BG/Comte favorite. I remember the 2005 La Lagune as a big, surly tannic beast.

My vote is for Barton... Classic Medoc vs tenderloin...

Hmmm...

Ok, my father spied my sole bottle of 82 Montrose and how can I say no. 2000 La Lagune as backup. The above bottles may be part of the NYE festivities. Merry Christmas all!

Make sure to update on that 82 Montrose, Jay. Curious to hear.

I didn't make it out to my sister's for Christmas this year but may this week at some point. I'll let you know if I do!

I was really disappointed by the 2005 La Lagune we had in our 2005 dinner a few weeks ago. It was like a drunken sailor. It was all over the place. And I am not just saying that to curry favour with The Godfather. You can never go wrong with 2004 Leoville Barton.

The bottle of 82 Montrose wasn't in the best of shape, mid shoulder fill and a completely saturated cork that came out in two pieces. My father thought it wouldn't improve as the sharp tannins were overwhelming the fruit. I've had this a few times and always thought it should have been a better wine given the vintage. No grade given its condition.
