I was watching a show last night that had a piece on Marques de Riscal winery where they showed how they opened ancient bottles with no risk of getting cork in the wine. Never seen this one before and for your interest enjoy the YouTube video. I think it's an ingenious method and a fun short watch. For the adventurous it may be a showstopper for your next dinner party or restauranteur to bring in a new side show.

For Those That May Need a New Bottle Opener
Re: For Those That May Need a New Bottle Opener
That's pretty cool, Danny. Doubt I'll be trying that any time soon, but if I do then you all will be the first to hear about it.
Re: For Those That May Need a New Bottle Opener
Thanks for posting the link Danny. Those are called "port tongs." An old and traditional method for opening aged bottles of… Port. No reason they wouldn’t work on any other type of wine. Except Champagne. That’s what Champagne sabers are for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCp9-tEHa8U
Re: For Those That May Need a New Bottle Opener
Thanks, Danny. And gives me hope for maybe one more good bottle of wine from DavidG and my vintage!
Re: For Those That May Need a New Bottle Opener
Danny,
I have the idea that the pliers used to cut the top off that old bottle was salvaged from a Spanish torture museum, maybe Rhonda.
Either that or Cambodia.
I hate to think what it was previously used for.
cheers
Mark
