Compare your 2019 Bordeaux futures purchases to 2018 and 2020

Post by Musigny 151 »

I have been going through them, and ended up with nine times as many 2019s as the combination of 2018 and 2020.

Since I do not owe anyone any wines, the easiest math problem I have ever assigned is to figure out how many bottles of each vintage I have. :D

30 bottles of 18 vs 36 of 19.

Basically skipped 2017 & subsequently probably overshot on 18’s. Hoping the 2021’s are reasonably priced.

2018 - 6
2019 - 131
2020 - 34

Honestly wish I'd have bought some more 2019 including firsts and some I missed out on like Palmer. I don't see the pricing going back to those levels of relative value, and hopefully I have a pretty good runway at 37 yrs old.

2018- 0
2019- 0
2020- 4 (Ch Ormes de Pez)

I topped out with my 2014-2016 run. Any 18' to 20' I'll just grab after release. Frankly, with only few exceptions, the price spread between futures and retail at release just isn't worth it. I paid $160 on futures for 2016 Pichon Lalande but just grabbed more on closeout from NH for $152. Anyways, at my age, I need to focus more on enjoying what I have rather than the next "greatest vintage of the century"

I have got 45 bottles of 2020 - Ausone, Canon - a total of 33 750ml bottles - and Pichon Lalande - 12 x 375
I have 162 bottles of 2019 - I started buying as soon as Alfred Tesseron slashed his price, obliging others to follow - of the bottles, actually 108 are half bottles and only 54 full bottles - of the total bottles 54 are Lynch, 24 halves and 30 full 750 bottles. The price looked good and so did the reviews, and the price is already up by 50%. The market is not stupid. I don’t own any 2019 first growths.
I have only 24 bottles of 2018: Lafite, Mouton and Figeac, all 750mls. I need to latch on to some Lynch before the price starts to run away from me.

2018-2 purchases, not futures though
2019-36. Should probably have bought more
2020-0 and don't intend to buy almost any until they hit the market

2018 - 6 bottles
2019 - 36 bottles
2020 - 0 bottles

I think I need to add to the 2019s...only have the 6 bottles from Margaux (Alter Ego), which will look foolish in a few years I think. Everything I have read seems to suggest that you can almost buy anything in this appellation blind in 2019 and you won't go too far wrong...Palmer, Rauzan-Segla, d'Issan, Malescot St. Exupéry, Cantenac-Brown, Giscours.

Need to pick up some 2020s to keep a few verticals going, but happy to wait till they are released.

Wow, impressive!
My spending was much more modest:

2020 - 29
2019 - 25
2018 - 20 (all now landed).

I'm thinking of adding some Duhart Milon 2020 as well.

Err, I think I got a bit carried away but took advantage of a good exchange rate and reasonable prices at the time. Now I have to work out where to put the 2019s on arrival,
Cheers
