World wide wine shortage?

Post by Bacchus »

This can only be bad news for pricing, perhaps even for mediocre vintages. Should we buy now whatever remains on the shelves from this past decade, since so much of it is pretty good?

I'm guessing this is going to hit the bulk wine and <$10/btl segment a lot harder than most of the stuff we talk about here.

I'm not worried, for a couple of reasons:

a - there has been such a surplus of wine grapes worldwide for a few years that many countries have been buying them to use to make alcohol fuel; and

b - the wines we discuss/chase/consume here are very, very far out of the "world winegrape production is down xxx%, prices will rise" realm.

We have a lot more to worry about when Chateau XYZ says they're being more selective and will only put 40% of their grapes into "le Grand Vin."

All these "peak production" scenarios are a bunch of Malthusian horseshit. You know Goldman Sachs is on the other side of this trade.

All true, I just thought we needed something to talk about other than the election. :-)

Yes, definitely! Winesearcher has 5.4 million bottles available right now. If I cash in my 401K I can afford about 1500 cases. How much are you in for?
