The 2009 Talbot has been uncorked and other ramblings....
...while wondering when all this snow is going to melt.

This wine is quite a bit personality-less at the get-go, hopefully we'll see some action here.

Ooh this is really sour, I hope it opens up with some air.

Every time I drink a Talbot, and I know I've told this story before, I think of the time we were in Montreal, at Les Halles maybe?, years ago, I ordered a Gruaud Larose, I think it was either a 1988 or 1990, they used to have their wines behind these little gates in the walls of the restaurant, and the waiter went and got it (it was too warm), and I could hear the guy at the next table say, in his French Canadian accent: Tal-BOH!
C'est un Tal-BOH!
C'est un Tal-BOH!

This wine is not wow-ing me.

I hope the future holds more promise for this wine. I have a few and will probably wait 5 years to open one.

The 2009 Talbot, as of spring 2015, is definitely in a very, very rugged place.
This was like when you are in a wrestling class in gym and you realize unexpectedly that you are going to get your ass kicked.
I'm exhausted after drinking this wine.
It is un-rate-able right now, I have no idea how it is going to turn out, it is a surly little beast right now.

I think this is going in my local stores for 80-100 USD now.

I think it was around $50 pre-arrival. Maybe less.

If there was a wine appreciation scale - how young or old do you like your (Bordeaux) wines - from 'in diapers' to 'necrotic' it would look something like this - young to old - left to right:
Jim aka ODL, Alex R, Comte Flaneur, Keith P (who thinks a cougar is a kitten) and then Francois Audouze, aka wine dinners.

You know, I really do like them when they are first released.
When they go into their shell at that 3-5 year mark, though, they can be tough to take.
This Talbot was a classic example.
When it was first released I actually found it soft and accessible.
Now it is hard and impenetrable.

Hope I did not get whipsawed. I bought the 2009 Talbot and the 2010 Cantemerle, both en primeur on strong ratings and qualitative reviews indicating a style I would like. Subsequent reports show both wines to have been downgraded so to speak since bottling, whereas their respective 2010 and 2009 counterparts have been lauded continuously it seems.

I'm confident you are good with the 2010 Cantemerle, Hound, which I have loved even during what should be an awkward period.
The 2009 Talbot... I just don't know. I mean, I've seen awkward wines before, this was REALLY awkward.

Can't recall if I tried one on arrival. Won't pull one for awhile then.

Hmm, I might have that backwards, and have the 2010 Talbot and the 2009 Cantemerle.

Parker loved the $2010 Talbot... and it was $40 at premiercru (I took delivery on it over a year ago as well), which is basically free in today's wintry bordeaux market.

Yes he gave 94 points to the 2010.
Early on I preferred the 2009 to the 2010.
Now I'm guessing I will ultimately prefer the '10.
