Re: How did I do?
I would say you did quite well, not only in quality (very good) but especially in pricing. As our BD is prone to comment. Well done Stefan; very well done.

Re: How did I do?
Sounds like a good deal on the Cos, Bill. Well done.
I know nothing about the other wines.
I'm thinking about buying some 2006 Clos de l'Oratoire (RMP91) for $34 in stock at PJs.

Amazing deal. I believe it was like $50 something (or $70 something. I don't remember now) at least when it first came out. This is the only wine I bought after our 2005 BWE Bordeaux trip. Let us know how it evolves now.

Thanks, all. The prices looked good, but I haven't tasted any of the wines other than the Gosset and the BOUCHARD Clos de la Mousse 2000.

Re: How did I do?
You don't see Cos for under $50 these days. Heck, you rarely see it for under $150....
Re: How did I do?
It is a weird kind of close out. The distributor gives out sale prices, but then takes bids. Sometimes you can bid 50% of the close out price and get the wine. I bid more on most things; around 60%; and hit on what I posted.

Re: How did I do?
Stefan,
Was that from "Closeout.com"? or some similar named site.
The best deals to me were the Hudelot Noellot Clos-Less than half price and a great wine.
The Gosset is great and a 750 sells for more.
The Boillot was $55 per btl and sold out fast-Excellent
Bouchard Genny is one of my favs from Bouchard-again half price
The 2005 Amiot Clos is fab. You have the 2001 down twice, is it actually two different vintages. Anyway 01 wines from Cote d' Nuit section of Cote are way under rated and starting to show very well.
Not famililar with the others but Ravenswood Zins were held in high regard. I liked them some ten + years ago, but I'm not a Zin fan.
All in all "Quite the Haul!"

Re: How did I do?
Thanks, Pappa; I edited the vintage on the 2nd CDLR. The wines came from a Houston distributor through my local wine merchant. I did not get some other Hudelot-Noellat I bid on, including HUDELOT ROMANEE ST VIVANT GC 2001 and D HUDELOT BONNES MARES GC 1999, and also missed out on D MUGNERET RICHEBOURG GC 2001.
Re: How did I do?
I opened a bottle of the Pierre Amiot 2000 Clos de la Roche for lunch with
Lucie's chicken & mushroom crepes. It is light, as you would expect for a
2000, but has a lovely Morey St Denis nose and a taste of sweet berries (raspberries & Brazosberries)
mixed with brambles. It is even tasty on the tonsils and has good holding power.
It should improve over the next five years, but I will find it hard to
keep my hands off these. Excellent value.

Re: How did I do?
WHIPPEE! My wine merchant friend found out that there was a lot left from the blowout and resubmitted my lost bids. Second time around I got some things that I really wanted:
A HUDELOT ROMANEE ST VIVANT 2001 6@144.44
D HUDELOT BONNES MARES GC 1999 12@55.56
D HUDELOT CHAMB MUSIG 1ER 1999 12@27.78
D MUGNERET RICHEBOURG GC 2001 3@122.22
DROUHIN BONNES MARES GR CRU 1998 12@50
DROUHIN CHAMBERTIN GR CRU 2002 3@66.67
P AMIOT MOREY ST DEN 1ER 2001 12@24.44
P AMIOT MOREY ST DEN 1ER 1993 11@21.11
When I told him I didn't have the money for all of this, he said don't worry; he has some contacts in Chicago who will lend me the cash.
I am anxious to try the '93 Amiot because I have very few '93 Burgs. Amiot is not so well known, but I have enjoyed just about all the ones I have tried; in particular, his '97 MSD village wine.
Lucie and I have tried the Henri Boillot '05 Puligny and the Bouchard '05 Meursault Genny. The smoky Boillot is really something; I loved it. Lucie preferred the more restrained and proper Bouchard. Both are certainly very good and outstanding bargains.
All three Ravenswood single vineyard zins are good even if this is an awkward time for them (the massive fruit has faded and the secondary characteristics are undeveloped). I think I'll open one or two tomorrow when my California-expert friends come over to get a different perspective.

Re: How did I do?
All the Burgs came in as I expected: The Drouhins are Joseph Drouhin; the D Hudelots are Daniel Moine-Hudelot; the A Hudelot is Hudelot-Noellat (A is for Alain).
With Texas distributors you never know. My '02 Lafite, bought as futures, arrived as Pauillac by Lafite! (This was Glazers, not Republic, but I also do not trust Republic.)

Re: How did I do?
Update on the 05 Bouchard Meursault Genny:
At lunch I drank a glass or so of this with left over pan seared sesame encrusted tuna to see how it would stand up to a dish that is good with PN (last night we drank 06 St Innocent Justice PN, which was just right with the tuna and its sauce of avocados and oranges; today the tuna had no sauce). Genny softened and seduced Charlie with multiple layers of flavor. I liked the first bottle of this but did not appreciate its depth. Genny deserves at least 92 points.

Re: How did I do?
When the distributor did not sell everything, I made some follow up low ball offers. Here is what I got:
A HUDELOT CLOS VOUGEOT GRD CRU 2002 1 bottle @ $50
A HUDELOT CLOS VOUGEOT GRD CRU 2001 12 bottles @ $42.22
D MUGNERET RICHEBOURG GC 6PK 2001 3 bottles @ $85
DROUHIN CORTON CHARLEMGN 6PK 2005 6 bottles @ $46.67
CH LARMANDE DF 2000 1 bottle @ $13.33
BOUCHARD PULIGNY FOLATIERER 2005 12 bottles @ $33.33
BOUCHARD VOLNAY CAILLER CARNOT 1999 12 bottles @ $33.33
HENRIOT BRUT MILLESIME 1998 11 bottles @ $31.11
HENRIOT ROSE MILLESIME 2002 12 bottles @ $33.33
I am particularly happy about the Richebourg.
My offer for 18 CH GAZIN KB 1998 @ $38.35 was not accepted. I suspect that they have not sold this wine and so I might resubmit a bid for it. After buying all this Burgundy and fizzy plonk I feel the need to get some Bordeaux.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but those are some pretty stunning prices, are they not?
Re: How did I do?
To see how good, Jim, check WineSearcher.
This is one of the few times that the three tier system has worked in my favor.

with all the wine you drink with the family on holidays and trips you needed to refill anyhow

I've been working on getting some '98 Gazin that the distributor has and now am at the crossroads. My wine merchant friend wrote me
>>
They will take the $35.00 bid on 1998 Gazin but we have to take all 31 bottles. What
do you think?
>>
Should I take them all? More than 2 1/2 cases of a wine rated only 90 by He Who Shall Not Be Named Here?

Re: How did I do?
Hmmm, you're crazy if you don't do it, Stefan!
We have already established that He Who Shall Not Be Named Here does not really know any more than you or me or anyone else!
I recall drinking that '98 Gazin when it was very young with Arv and a group of BWEers in Boston, I thought it was splendid!
I'll buy 6-12 of them off you next time I see you, if that helps you with your decision!

Re: How did I do?
I mean, this is a tough call. For the same money plus $71, I can get from PC four bottles of Henri Boillot 2007 Chevalier Montrachet, which should be great in 12 years (well, except for the 1 or 2 promoxed bottles). I am in a dither...

Yeah, thirty-one bottle of Gazin may be a bit much....
Re: How did I do?
Thanks, Jim. I'm glad that you and other BWEers enjoyed this wine, but how can I take a wine to a BWE function that cost me only $35 + 11% + tax?

Re: How did I do?
True.
And come to think of it, the wine was somewhat He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-Here-erized.
Re: How did I do?
Here is what He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-Here wrote about the '98 Gazin in 2001: "A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of charred wood, coffee, blackberry and cherry fruit, and new saddle leather. Full-bodied, dense, chewy, and intense, this muscular as well as backward vin de garde requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020." Does not sound He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-Here-erized from the point of view of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-Here.

Re: How did I do?
Although with a points rating of 90 it is obviously a decidely mediocre wine (remember 90 is the old 86), I will happily buy some off you stefan, even at a premium to what you paid...

Hi Stefan
please let me know your feeling, when you'll drink your first 2001 Romanée-St-Vivant from Alain Hudelot-Noellat. i had it last year, and I think it is one of the best Bourgogne I had. It is an awesome complex wine. Next week, i might buy a bottle (263 CAN$ here) to bring to Ottawa and open it with dstgolf. It is a ''oh my God'' type of Bourgogne. So complex, balanced, etheral...

I'm glad to hear that, Nic. So it is approachable already? Maybe we'll try one on our anniversary in August if not before. Or come to Texas and I'll pop a cork on one.
