2017 Pomerols
2017 Pomerols
Hi,
Photos and notes can be found here: www.bordeauxwineblog.com
I have not been as quick on the draw as others... I'll follow through with the other appellations in short order.
All the best,
Alex R.

From that preview, Pomerol seems to have done well in 2017. Very interesting comments on properties less known. I like that.

I’m intrigued by this Feytit Clinet stuff.

Re: 2017 Pomerols
If I remember correctly, Feytit Clinet is supposedly not a homogeneous plot but spread over several parcels of the appellation and it's surprising to see how well it's performing. Good to know...Another under the radar stuff seems to be beauregard...
Re: 2017 Pomerols
Thanks for the notes. I'm looking forward to trying some of these 'rebooted' estates.

Alex,
Interesting.
Great you like Petit Village.
What about Bourgneuf, Certan de May and VCC?

Re: 2017 Pomerols
Petit Village seems to have really pumped their (already) high prices in recent years.
Is it worth it?

Re: 2017 Pomerols
I see that Gazin, which usually has a good QPR in comparison to other Pomerol, did very well again. Lucie and I will celebrate that by drinking 1998 Gazin tonight with lamb chops.

Re: 2017 Pomerols
AKR,
I think so. Since the sister in law of Olivier Berrouet (Petrus), Diana Garcia Berrouet, took over in 2015, Petit Village has made beautiful wines, unrecognizable compared with older boring ones.
Is situated in the best part of Pomerol, not so far from Hosanna, Petrus, Certan de May and Le Pin.
I purchases 2015 and 2016 already.

Hi Izak,
You asked, "What about Bourgneuf, Certan de May and VCC?"
I simply didn’t have the time to do any more Pomerols. I will be more free to do so next year .
As for VCC, it is mentioned, with considerable praise, on my blog post.
As for Certain de May, I have only rarely had a wine (once at Nairac with an old vintage you had contributed), and visited for the first time in my life with Ivar and friends two weeks ago! There was no tasting of the 2017.
As for Bourgneuf, yes, I wish I had sampled the wine. We went there twice together and I have a very good memory of both the wine and meeting the daughter.
All the best,
Alex

Alex,
I must have been blind yesterday evening concerning VCC!
I wonder why you didn't ask Jean-Luc Barreau for tasting 2017 at CDM?? Next time just mention your blog and my name, he will surely let you taste new vintage.
You colud have gone from CDM to Bourgneuf, 3 min by car.
You also like Clos L'Eglise, excellent Pomerol.

"Not so long, but the experience is like good sex."
Still trying to parse this.

Gazin is very very nice too in 2015.
I think I never had a bad Gazin. Any vintages. Maybe I had 6-7 different vintages.

Re: 2017 Pomerols
Robert,
Sorry, I would be hard put to divide the wines I tasted into the "modern" and "traditional" camps.
The thing about Pomerol is that the wines naturally have almond aromas/flavors that are sometimes difficult to distinguish from the influence of oak.
In fact, none of the wines were "over the top" or blatantly Parkerized.
All the best,
Alex R.

Re: 2017 Pomerols
As expected, the 1998 Gazin was really good and complemented Lucie's lamb chops. This bottle, purchased around 10 years ago, likely lived most of its life at around 65-67F since it was in a a distributor"s "cold" warehouse before I acquired it and I stored in a relatively warm part of my wine room. It was mature but probably still not at its peak.

Re: 2017 Pomerols
I recall that '98 Gazin as a "big" wine.
I liked it too, although I thought it was quite different from the voluptuous 1990 Gazin, one of my Top 20 greatest wine experiences.

Re: 2017 Pomerols
The 2008 Gazin is a big'un. Hopefully at nearly 10 it is approaching approachability.
