BWEers visit the Great State of Maine
Had Tom and Gail over to Chateau How last night on a splendid October weekend in New England, the foliage not yet at peak.
We had lobster and tenderloin steak, and ate fresh whoopie pies not only with dessert but with breakfast this morning as well.
Mmmm the soft shell lobster was so sweet.
We started with a 2006 Dom Perignon and 2014 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, and a 1979 Gruaud Larose that was right on point, I LOVE that era for Gruaud.
The 2007 Italian cabernet that Tom brought along was perfect with the whoopie pies and steak, i'll have to check the label when I get back home.
The 1958 Lynch Bages was undrinkable.
We also uncorked the 1918 Haut Brion which was likewise undrinkable but we were happy to put the wine to our lips to experience the grapes of a century ago.
A great time catching up with old BWE friends!

Very nice! We have got to come and visit one day in the summer or fall!
Finally! And that explains the Red Sox beating the Yankees in game 1!JimHow wrote:.

Ha yes. As you can see the cork broke into a thousand pieces.
Tom did the honors of the uncorking.
The nose was actually not bad, the wine was just basically dead.

That's a bummer. At least the Red Sox started off with a little of their 1918 form last night.

I was about 15 feet away from a bad car crash last night. Two SUV's slammed into each other in an intersection where I was waiting to turn at the corner. There are so many issues at that cross roads (busiest one in the county) that they have lots of cameras on it all the time.

Too bad on the 18 you kept for so long and the 58. Murky at best.
After working liability claims for 10 years I am hyper cautious at all intersections.

Too bad about your Haut Brion. I bought mine from some guy named Rudy. It was excellent and unbelievably youthful-tasting.

A small delegation from Colorado made a pilgrimage to the great state of Maine to present our case for Denver as a convention site. Much flattery was spoken, the usual bribes were paid, now we can only wait and see.
Seriously, what a great night! It was humbling to help Jim open the most legendary bottle of BWE lore, despite the sad state of the bottle and its contents. The '18 Haut Brion presented itself better than the '58 Lynch - our Benevolent Dictator has held up better!
The Italian wine was the 2007 Quintarelli Alzero - a wine made in the style of Amarone using a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Quite good with the steak and the pies de Whoopie.

The international city of Denver was very well represented at Chateau How. Very well represented indeed.

So did Boston, sort of... thank goodness.
Are you saying we should have the next BWE convention in Mitt Romney's Salt Lake City?!

We don't have to float bond offerings to budget for BWE, and Colorado already can't get people from Denver to the ski slopes in a timely fashion.AlohaArtakaHoundsong wrote:You guys backed out of the Olympics.
