Re: So what have you bought lately?
Adding to my "OK to drink anytime" inventory of white Burgs (mostly from the Maconnais)
12 x 2019 Frantz Chagnoleau St. Veran La Fournaise
12 x 2019 Frantz Chagnoleau St. Veran A La Cote
12 x 2019 Frantz Chagnoleau Pouilly Fuisse Pastoral
6 x 2018 Bernard Defaix Chablis Vieilles Vigne
6 x 2019 Vincent Dampt Chablis
Unrelated to white Burg, I also just scored a case of 2017 Produttori Barbaresco to start enjoying before the 2016 is ready.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Just tasted the 2019 Frantz Chagnoleau Saint-Veran A La Cote with my Skurnik rep a couple of weeks back and nice job as this perennial white burg value was quite good with a little reductive goodness going on at this early stage but was balanced not to mention the Lafon connection.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
jckba, have you had these wines in other vintages? The producer is new to me, but Neal Martin's reviews convinced me I would like them. So far I've tasted the Pouilly Fuisse Pastoral and the St. Veran La Fournaise, and both were quite nice now, but will be enjoyable for at least several years.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
Just picked up one each of the following to start my backfill effort.
2009 Branaire Ducru
2014 Canon
2010 Canon la Gaffeliere
2009 Monbousquet
2012 Smith-Haut Lafitte

JCNorthway, no not much experience other than with a 2017 version of one of the single vineyard SV’s that a friend had brought to a dinner as he was smitten with his little white burg discovery and while I remember liking it, I never followed it up with a purchase.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Oh they do Jon.
The key adjective is ‘weightless’
I was lucky enough to drink a glass of DRC Richebourg 2000 out of one of them at a dinner a week ago ‘Chez Antoine’ - yes our own Antoine.
Memories of DRC Richebourg encounters with other BWE folk - Danny, Jim, Tim, Patrick - came flooding back.
This glass costs but a small fraction of such a wine and therefore is surely worth it.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Maybe, Ian, but DRC Richebourg tastes great out of a paper cup.
I would be tempted to buy the glasses if they had an unbreakable version.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I’ve progressively worked my way up the glassware ladder — Crate and Barrel, Reidel, Schott Zwiesel, Reidel Somm Series, Gabriel Glas, Gabriel Glas Gold — eventually settling on Zaltos (which are also pretty darn weightless and attractive) as my tip-top stem (never tried a Sensory).
Then Berserker Day came and I ordered a cross-section of Grassl stemware on sale ($35/each including shipping) and I’ve been very impressed. Not quite as attractive and light as Zaltos, but very close and they seem to give a superior presentation of the wine. Bottomline: since I bought them, I keep reaching for the Grassls.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Personnally, i prefer spend 200 $ on a good Fifth Growth like Lynch Bages than for 2 wine glasses. A good wine is a good wine, and a bad wine is a bad wine, whatever the glass.
But i might be totally wrong. Maybe i taste better in Gucci underwear? Who knows.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
2x 2020 Langoa Barton
2x 2020 d'Armailhac
2x 2020 Ormes de Pez
All still priced under what I can get any recent vintages for.
Jim, I thought you might wait until after the fall BWE DC event with any Lynch Bages announcement. Anyway looking forward to the conclusion of this..
Happy Friday!

Bad glassware is like playing Beethoven on a 1950s transistor radio. You get the gist but none of the nuance.Blanquito wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 9:37 pm I’ve progressively worked my way up the glassware ladder — Crate and Barrel, Reidel, Schott Zwiesel, Reidel Somm Series, Gabriel Glas, Gabriel Glas Gold — eventually settling on Zaltos (which are also pretty darn weightless and attractive) as my tip-top stem (never tried a Sensory).

Now that is hawt.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
This little undergarment digression makes me so glad my main accoutrements are strictly wine related!
Re: So what have you bought lately?
Glad to see you like the glasses, Ian. Maybe I am missing something. I got one for Christmas and it just doesn't compare to the zalto's or gabriel glass gold. It feels clunky and I just don't get the same quality/nuance from the nose. I'm guessing you are using these mostly for barolo's and burgundy? Any other tips? Maybe I haven't given the glass a fair shake yet.Comte Flaneur wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 6:57 pm Nice catches stefan

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Joel, I really like the Grassl Liberté for most whites (more than the GGG) and some lighter bodied reds or for smaller pours. The 1855 is great for Bordeaux and other bold wines, but is only marginally (if at all) superior to the Zalto Bordeaux stem (and not as attractive). The Mineralite has become my go to stem for champagne and Riesling. I haven’t tried Grassl’s pinot Cru stem. After trying the 1855, Liberté and Mineralite, I grabbed a few more of each as the sale was still going.
If on sale at $35, definitely worth buying a few, but if you’ve already got Zaltos, probably not worth the ~$60 they run full retail.

I have mainly been using zaltos over recent years Joel, but I was very impressed by the RCS at a recent dinner where we drank mainly high end burgundy. I will be taking a couple to a Latour dinner on Tuesday where we will be comparing the 1995 and 1996 Latours, so will let you know how I get on.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
@Ian: I was glad to get some classically styled Burgs for drinking in Oregon. It is hard to find value in Burgundy in today's market.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
Yes, indeed. A buddy introduced me to RWC’s olive oils 12 years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. My kids love them too, drizzled on nearly everything.

Filled on a case of the 2018 Baudry La Croix Boissee Chinon from Crush’s offer yesterday for $44.95/btl + tax.
